I chewed on this all night and wanted to put together my long form post. TLDR: this is not getting better this year because the offense is horrific. Sadly the same problems we saw in the game were the same problems we saw in spring practice.

The good: Our special teams improved significantly. Our defense was solid except the front 3 rarely got a pass rush. Our offensive line seems to have improved and I would argue that two of those sacks were on Sims (remember when I posted about completion percentage being a deceptive statistic because players took unnecessary sacks when they knew that was a metric?).

The what: What ever happened to Fidone, Ervin, the use of the FB or even Chief Borders. Chief is not even on the participation report. I saw one play where we used a FB in a traditional FB role. We used a total of 18 defenders. This is no different than the Frost era. It mostly seemed like we used the same players all game.

My issues: Minnesota is not a good team. This team replaced a lot of players this year and had two of their starting LBs injured. We also took out their best DL in the 3rd quarter. Could we move the ball? Not one bit. First and foremost we had to burn 3 timeouts during the game due to procedures or not getting the play in on time. Same problems from the spring game. We turned the ball over 4 times, and our output was pathetic. Everyone is talking about Ervin's ypg. Take his long run out and he is barely hitting 4 ypc. You need consistency, not home runs. This offense is going to continue to struggle all year. We have no true possession receiver. We have no true downfield threat. We have no power running game.

Sims was horrific. Three of his completions he never actually saw the reciever and we re great catches by the wideouts. For the game Sims was 11-19 with three interceptions and 3 sacks. That means that he was truly 11-22. That is not going to beat anyone.

But the worst part of thee game (IMO) was the blown opportunity at the end of the first half. Was it a TD by Grant? Probably. But with 11 seconds left you do NOT go for it from 6 with no timeouts. Why? If you get a hold, a sack, or are stopped short, you get zero points. This is football 101. Prior to the final drive we were barely moving the ball. To ask six yards and no mistakes is a big gamble. Those lost three points came up huge. In fact, IMO this was one of the worst calls in NU history. This is worse then the SF onside kick because you can still stop the drive after the onside kick. This is just taking points off the board. Oh, and if you have not seen the score, we lost by those exact same 3 points. When asked about it Rhule said he would do that again.

Finally, I see 2 games we should win on the schedule. I see another three tossups. Beyond that, 7 consecutive losing seasons.
Where was our best DL? I loved seeing Lloyd and Bullock making huge plays. Loved holding minny to 55 yards rushing. Loved how some think minny doesn't reload their O line, didn't have their nest we group under Fleck, Spann-Ford isn't that good, 13 points is a big offensive showing plus getting four turnovers, our abs rating was as low as minnys qb rating.
I loved seeing freshmen D linemen making plays. Frosh wrs making plays.
We outgained minny, we turned the ball over too much, simple as that. Possessions were at a premium, we ended four with the turnovers alone. Yet our TOP matched theirs even so against this team who's dominated it in the past.

It was the first game with a new staff, on the road against a team that has been consistently solid for quite a few years. It sucks they lost, especially the way they did, but by no means is this season lost. This team will be miles better by the end of the year.
I let myself slip out of the "prove it" mode. No, the season is not lost. This was a game I thought they could win going in and it is a game they should have won.

There is no way they should lose to Colorado but now I am asking myself: Will Nebraska find a way?

No
It'll take more than 4 ways,much more

It's certainly possible they could lose that game too. But Rhule will look at the film and get to work. They are going to have to change up the game plan somewhat because Sims is who he is. But it was refreshing to see a Husker defense shut down a Big 10 running game. That is something to build on.

Hate on Nebraska all you want, but you're completely disrespecting minny here.
They're better than an 8 win team
They aren't a horrible team, but with their schedule, getting to 8 wins will be very good for them. At NC, at OSU, at Iowa, home against Mich, ILL, Wisc. they'll have to play better to get to 8 wins.

They are solid and they played good, clean ball. The above isn't to take anything away from them, they'll be a tough out for most all teams on their schedule, but we don't know about their offense. 13 points against a brand new defensive scheme for a D that wasn't good last year is hard to gauge. Is their O pretty bad, or is our D that much improved? Probably a little of both.

Princewill Umanmielen, Cam Lenhardt, Nash Hutmacher, Omar Brown, Elijah Jeudy, and I think Chief Borders... Maybe part of it was fresh legs but things looked even better defensively when they were in the game. I think that LT jumped early regularly (not called) because Cam was giving him the business.

Stuffed the run. Yes, loved it.

Going back and starting from Callahan, it seems Nebraska could be considered strong on one side of the ball, but not both.

Positive spin, for years, wins have been right there for the taking. Frustratingly so.

Rhule said something along the lines of close losses are the worst disease a team can have.

-8 seconds, no time outs.
-a passing game that had been erratic at best
-with pass protection that could not be counted on
-in clearly a low scoring game where every point was going to be meaningful

But sure lets go for the TD........
The ONLY bad thing with going for it there was if the pass was not open (it was to the TE by the way) throw it out of the end zone. Then we get three Points. THATS ON SIMS AND SIMS ALONE. it was NOT a bad coaching problem … it was BAD EXECUTION!

I think they have scoreboard the last couple against wiscy. I think game one minny had growing pains. Their run game was crap and so was their passing game only getting under 55% completions.
Compared to years past, we looked better than we have against them. We also experienced momentum after our one turnover, another thing we rarely saw.
First games more about you more often than not. Take out the turnovers and the Sims stare downs, I like what I saw

Sims is career NCAA LEADER IN INTs and we had eight turnovers in the Spring game.

A good leader remembers those things and factors them in at the goal line with eight seconds to go.
