Schools To Directly Pay Players

How were players compensated? A scholarship? Some meals?

Nebraska is finally starting to get back ahead of the curve and yet people can't get on board.

Weird 5 star recruits that could help us win championships aren't complaining
Is this a serious question? The VAST majority of scholarship athletes cost the university money. Free tuition, books, all meals, healthcare, housing, etc... Basically everything you need to live for free for 5 years while earning a degree that can earn you a career.

I don't disagree they should get something more, but let's not pretend they weren't getting compensated pretty well already.

Do you never read or listen to former athletes talk about being completely broke and having to pick up jobs on top of being student athletes?

I am not suggesting that Nebraska continue to keep pace with whatever methodology exists to remain competitive.

I AM suggesting that the thinking that football and basketball players get what they "deserve" is a very self-interested, self-centered and myopic perspective.

You obviously avoided answering the questions I posed on my response but the paying of athletes is going to potentially result in an end to the non-revenue sports as we know it. Wrestling, track and field, volleyball, softball, soccer, swimming are money losers.

Your perspective suggests that there was some greedy owner or administrator racking in all these monies and pocketing the money for themselves. My perspective is that all these monies were gathered to fund non-revenue sports, fund thousand of jobs such as trainers, managers, PT specialists, strength & conditioning, nutritionists ...

Where is Nebraska going to come up with $20M per year? Where is South Dakota State going to come up with $20M? Is it going to stop at $20M? The perspective that these athletes have been exploited is laughable, ludicrous and logically unsupportable.

I'll be honest. I don't care about SDSU, iowa state, NDSU, UNO or anybody else.

And I'll bet we figure out where to find the money.

I never said anyone was exploited, but honestly football, volleyball and basketball generate the revenue here. Sorry not sorry?

Part of not caring about other schools is self-fulfilling defeatist prophesy. Does tOSU care about NU? What about Michigan? Should Michigan care about Michigan St? What about Iowa or Northwestern or Vanderbilt or Wisconsin? Who are they going to play?

Unbelievable

It really depends on the school. If you're probably throwing money at basketball players, not football players.

Sure, you could blow your entire budget on hiring the best football players, but (hopefully) KU is smart enough to realize that Duke, North Carolina, Kentucky and others will be in a basketball arms race. If you can only spend $20m, schools will have to think about their opportunity cost. By arming up in football, a school like Kansas may be directly hindering their basketball chances.

This gets tough for a school like Ohio State or Michigan State, who have historically been pretty good at both sports. Or NU Football AND Volleyball. Essentially, every dollar we give John Cook is one less dollar we can give Matt Rhule.

it will be interesting to see how schools divvy up these funds. Again, if you are a school like Creighton it's pretty straightforward. But what about schools like Stanford or Texas who have pretty solid Athletics across 10 or 15 sports?

Again this is good for Nebraska. I'm sure the bulk of our money will go to football. But if you are Wisconsin football, you are not only competing to outspend other Big Ten football teams, but you are also competing against Wisconsin hockey, Wisconsin wrestling, Wisconsin basketball, and so forth.
UCONN is one of best basketball programs in the country better than most you mentioned. They would be hard pressed to continue spending millions on a pretty much failed football program. The old saying of BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR BECAUSE YOU MIGHT GET IT... sums up for me what’s happening. Yea there will be some cash happy athletes but I suspect the vast majority won’t be very happy when it’s all said and done.

When will the 4 years of eligibility go out the window? That won't stand up in court, either.

And when will we start trading players? "We need a QB, so we will take you backup Johnny off your hands, $1 million for him, $1 million for you, and we will give him an MBA degree after two years. We won't make him go to class - we will have a private tutor do everything online."

This is all going to get really interesting, really fast.

That's an interesting take I don't disagree with necessarily

It's just a different can of worms that doesn't have a structure in place to govern. It's been headed this way for a long, long time, but it's likely going to be a jumbled up mess in the short term. Who's going to run it? I'm guessing it's going to look a lot like the Wild West for a few years. I've read a couple of pieces that mentioned roster salary caps. Who's going to set those? What's the penalty when Alabama or Ohio State are $20 million over the cap?

Other question now is where are we going to fit in the new landscape? Do we end up a small market team or are we going to be competitive?

Nebraska = Green Bay

Ohio State, Michigan, Alabama, Georgia = Dallas Cowboys

The 4 year question is a good one and I've mentioned it before. There's no reason for it to apply now.
