In-state 4* ILB Nick Henrich unofficial on Monday, 6/18

I'm not.
There was a time when talented Nebraska kids would not even consider anywhere else but NU if they were offered.

We always get caught up with letting a good one get away because we have so few in state on an average year. But if we always have so few, and we are typically getting our good ones elsewhere, it probably doesn’t matter as much as we think when a local goes elsewhere.

To a degree, yes, but why they went elsewhere matters. Were we in on them early and often and they just liked Oregon as a kid or grew up in Florida before moving here in 6th grade? Or did we slow play them because yeah they were good but, I mean, it’s Nebraska. Drew Ott mattered. Noah Fant matters. And Harrison Phillips was a 3rd round draft pick.

And once we are winning 10 or more games each year, it will be like that again.
Sorry it won't be like that again because it's never been like that. Kids have left this state for years, even under Osborne & Devaney. Granted more have left as of late so we can turn that around but we'll never get EVERY kid we offer in this state.

Of course a few will leave but when we are winning, it's very few.

And the TE from Gothenburg. Who ended up playing for Dallas as a pro but went to WYOMING

Jay Novacek was asked to walk on. He wasn't some highly recruited guy out of HS he was a project who really blossomed in college. He had no power 5 offers. He was like 6"2" 180 coming out. He still wasn't all that big when he played for Dallas about 6"4 220. Think any number of walk-on TE at Nebraska that made his mark.

That is a complete contrast to someone like Phillips who was slow played or Fant who BP only wanted as a D-end for whatever reason. Not to mention Ott and Byzata who never got a look because the were from smaller schools. Other guys also had great careers, like Noah Keller who goes to Ohio and is a 4 year starter at LB watched him play in HS at Kearney and he was every bit as good as Bo Ruud coming out.

I will easily say that BP was a piss poor elevator of talent and he greatly undervalued the talent in Nebraska. I mean Noah Fant is a preseason AA this year and will be a high draft choice when he comes out. But in BP's eyes he wasn't a TE. Riley tried to get back in on him late, but no chance at that point. Phillips was the PAC 12 defensive player of the year last year, but we want to wait and see him play his senior year. How many guys came out of the Metro and went to Iowa under BP's watch and played pretty well there?

The talent drain in Nebraska started under Callahan and got worse under BP.

Happened before Callahan and Pelini, just not as much hype around recruits at that earlier time. But so what?

We have a ton of kids that left their home state and that the schools in that state couldn't keep them in state.

No particular reason a kid should have an allegiance, but when he does, we ought to be very sure we don't miss him. That's where I think we have blown it recently. Now it will encourage many to have an allegiance if we start winning again, that's for sure.
