I think fighters was in his head because the next sentence or so he said fighters.
I re-watched it myself...he definitely said "fighters"...no doubt in my mind. Nothing more to see here.
Replayed it a dozen times, he said fighters. You hear two syllables: "Fi" and "gerrs" Fi-gers. He had a hard time making a "T" sound that whole interview
No way was there an "fi". There was most definitely an "uh". Whether you want to say butters, pluggers, or worse is debatable.
