NCAA Tournament Discussion: 2022 Champions - Kansas

I always like to look at schools that make the Sweet 16 in both MBB and WBB. Right now it is just IOWA STATE — though the winner of todays WBB games between Michigan and Villanova, and between Arizona and UNC, will join ISU. The most likely team at the start, Baylor, had both teams lose.

March Madness - 2022 version

What about Iowa State’s loss to Hampton? Wasn’t that a 15 vs a 2? That was maybe, Iowa State’s best ever team. Marcus Fizer and Larry Eustachy. 2000 maybe?
One of Hoiberg's ISU teams lost to UAB, they were a 14 seed.
That was an equally bitter loss.
The year before the Hampton loss, Iowa State lost an Elite 8 game to Michigan State, at the Palace.
ISU led by 7 with less than 6 minutes to go, and they didn't lose because of the officials. But the officiating that day, was epic.
Eustachy got tossed with 2 technicals, with 9 seconds to play.

Another awesome day of hoops!

The only thing that went wrong was Duke winning. ;)

Zona and the Zags DONE!

BTW, Texas Tech's coach is fantastic. If you haven't seen how humble he is, how much his team loves him -- you should check it out. He's like everyone's favorite grandfather. It's a shame his team lost, but great effort.

Oh, and go Nova!

I thought when Beard moved on to Texas, that Tech was finished as a basketball school.
This guy really has done an amazing job to keep it going.

All us Purdue fans knew the team wouldn’t go far. But to lose to the #15 seed in this fashion was devastating.

But again, no surprise. Anyone watching Purdue all season, or the entire Big Ten for that matter, knew the entire conference was overrated by the media.

This tournament would have you believing most conferences were overrated. The ACC is the only conference with multiple teams still in position to advance to the Elite 8. But just because the ACC has 2 (or 3) teams still alive doesn't necessarily mean they were the best conference top-to-bottom this season (they weren't). The tournament is one-and-done. Upsets happen. There's only one 1-seed in the Elite 8. Only three of the eight are 1 or 2 seeds (teams that should be in the Elite 8 based on chalk) -- or five of the eight are there based on upsets to get this far.

The bigger story is St Peter's incredible run -- which I won't diminish by saying the teams they've beaten were overrated. They are the only team in tournament history to win multiple games as double-digit dogs. They are the only team seeded lower than 12 to ever advance as far as the Elite 8. It's true postseason magic -- and it's what makes men's basketball the greatest postseason in college athletics.

The story is much more St. Peter's than it is Purdue or the Big Ten. Embrace the magic rather than downplaying it -- it's been a great, highly unpredictable tournament. I don't think there was a single bracket out of the millions in major contests that was still alive heading into the Sweet Sixteen -- I've never seen that.

More about the greatest Cinderella in tournament history ...

As mentioned above, St. Peter's is the only team seeded lower than 12 to ever make the Elite 8. And the only team to ever win multiple games as double-digit underdogs.

But also consider .... there were two 12 seeds to make the Elite 8 in tournament history. Missouri in 2002 and Oregon State in 2021. But both of those teams were battle-tested by playing in major conferences (and the gap between a 12-seed and 15-seed is typically huge). And both of those 12-seeds played at least one game on the path to the Elite 8 that was also there due to an upset (an easier path than St. Peter's). St Peter's has faced the highest possible seed in each of their three wins (wasn't the case for Mizzou or OSU). And again, no 13-seeds nor 14-seeds have ever made it this far (and obviously no 15 or 16 seeds).

15-seeds were a combined 7-138 in tournament history prior to St. Peter's. They are now 10-138.

St. Peter's is everything that makes sports great. It may be a long time before we ever see a Cinderella playing as well as they have for as long as they have. Embrace the Peacocks!
