Caleb Lightbourn Transferring

The plan is to get Armstrong the scholarship for this fall, and go back to the days where you get a "free year" from a walk-on at the specialist position like we did with Alex Henery, Sam Foltz, etc. Then once they are starting put them on scholarship. Before LIghtbourn was let go, we actually were thinking we would have 2 punters on scholarship (you could make the case CL was kickoff specialist). I stated in a PM we were at 86 before the Green commitment, which means there's one more I wasn't quite sure of, so we had to start trimming fat to take his commitment publicly.

Watching LIghtbourn and Armstrong punt in practice was night/day. The problem is for every one that Lightbourn kicked the way he was capable, he kicked 5 about 20 yards.
I never quite understood why CL got a free pass for his punting struggles and it was typically backed up with how he had to be thrust into action after the Foltz tragedy. Freshman become starters on every team and every season and at far more difficult positions. Foltz sure affected us all but I am not sure why it would have been something Lightbourn shouldn't have been able to overcome. They shared positions but other than that I am not sure of the connection. I don't have the stats to back this up but my perception is he punted far better his Freshman year that any subsequent years. With that said I will root for his success which should probably be getting a degree and hope we have someone ready to step up. With the exception of a few kicks I was concerned with Armstrong as well.

Grant Detlefsen from Southeast.

We have four punters on the roster now. RSr Isaac Armstrong, RSr Jackson Walker, RFr William Przystup (Michigan St transfer), and Detlefsen.
One would think out of this group, we’d find a solid contributor. Is anyone showing signs?

To me, one great measure of a punter is making clutch punts in adverse weather conditions. The NU-Michigan State game last year in Lincoln featured two guys who performed well, made no shanks, and were key contributors in the game - and we have both those guys this year in Isaac and transfer Pryzystup (not sure about his eligibility???)

I’ll take reliability under fire over an occasional big boot every time. So two solid contributors, IMO.

Punting stats 2018 NU v MSU in Lincoln:

MSU 7/294 average 42, long 55

NU 5/205 average 41, long 53

Weather: snowing, temp with wind chill 10 degrees, wind blowing 22 mph

Brook Berringer seemed to do just fine and garnered all-conference honors. We then moved on to Scott Frost who brought us a national title and Eric Crouch who won the Heisman. If Lightbourn is asked why he is transferring and couldn't even start at Nebraska and responds "because Sam Foltz passed away in 2016 when I thought I was going to redshirt" he will be playing at Doane in 2019.

Your logical/rational and well thought out arguments to this discussion are not what I want to hear. ;)

Obviously Armstrong will be our starting punter again this year. Walker has been at four colleges (two Jucos and Kansas) and I've never read anything about him being in the mix here. Neither Przystup or Detlefsen are on campus yet. Przystup played in four games last year at Michigan State. 27 punts with a 40.6 average, so the kid has some upside. Apparently he was promised a scholarship at MSU, but it never materialized and he will be applying for a waiver to play immediately here. Not really sure on Detlefsen yet.

Punters need to be right in the head. Remember how CLUTCH Erstad was vs Miami? My God, every punt was important. And he delivered. Ice water
I think of that often. I don't believe that Nebraska would have won that game with just an average punter. He affected that game on so many levels, probably including play calling but Osborne could know on 3rd down that he didn't need to do something high risk because Erstad had his back. Besides his obvious talent in baseball, I've also heard that it was the combination of his clutch play in that NC game and his stated willingness to get contract negotiations wrapped up as easily as possible that pushed the Angels to make him the #1 pick of the draft. Whether that's true or not, it's plausible.

wish Caleb well. unfortunately, my memory of him will always be that onside kick disaster vs tOSU. never seen anything like that, and I'm sure i never will.

I feel like that’s letting him off the hook a bit. Being thrust into the starter role in 2016 and still not able to figure it out 30+ games later in 2018 is not a “he didn’t get to redshirt” problem. It’s not like he was forced to start at QB.
Whatever the case, it was a big load for any kid to have to perform under the circumstances. Having to deal with the emotional tragedy of losing a team mate, a proven asset to the team, and the expectations to step in and fill the kicking role? I wish him the best.

I always feel bad for kids when it doesn't work out. Athletes want to play and play well, and quite simply, he didn't at any point with us.

This is a win/win for him and for us. He gets to go somewhere else and try to figure out his form and see if he can get things working again. We get to use his scholarship in a more useful way.

Good luck to him
