That was during the Callahan era. We didn't do anything of note on the field, so we turned to "wins" off the field. Couple that with a major offensive transition (the first in decades, "flip the culture"), and you have yourself a major hype machine.
Some of the most hyped players of that era were Harrison Beck and Sam Keller. These guys were supposed to be transformational players, the first true quarterbacks at Nebraska that were built for NFL success.
Beck was a complete disaster, and Keller took it a step further and ruined EA Sports College Football video games.
