Upcoming Schedule -- Something to Cheer About

By your method, after one game last football season, Indiana was better than Michigan and Purdue far outpaced Penn State.

The fact that Indiana has already "clinched" a post-season spot makes them the league favorite.
Everybody in the free world goes by standings on who the better team is because they are in first. It can change as the season goes on and if/after they play. Just because you lose to a team does not make them better than you if you are in first place which we are so only logical choice is Nebraska is better as of April 23, 2013 as we are ahead of them in standings. We got the job done so far and they have not. Funny but the websites projecting the field of 64 has Minnesota as best team in big 10 as they are leading league by win %, weird how that works being in first being called the best team in conference. Indiana is the best team by overall RPI but nothing else.

Nebraska: 19-19, RPI 35
Indiana: 29-8, RPI 14

Really?

I understand your desire to use standings as a benchmark, but feel that it is foolish to say that Nebraska is a better team than Indiana based on your highly limited and biased sample size of conference play. You must understand this perspective, no?

here are national standings...safe to say that on April 23 Indiana is probably a little "better" than Nebraska ....whatever that means

i have to giggle a bit ... arguing about which team is best or first in a crappy baseball conference!

i wonder how long it's been since a big ten team advanced to the super regionals...(and it's been, what, decades since a CWS out of that conference?!) purdue last season was indiana this season -- and a total post-season failure. i'll take the big ten seriously just as soon as they do something worthy when it counts.

The B1G, en masse, has performed more ably than Nebraska the last few years, so I assume they deserve SOME credit.

2010: Minnesota, Regional Finalist
2009: Minnesota, Ohio State Regional Finalists
2007: Michigan, Super Regional Participant
2003: Ohio State, Super Regional Participant
2002: Ohio State, Regional Finalist

The last CWS participant was Michigan in 1983 & 1984. (The Big Ten also ranks 3rd in CWS titles.)

2003 is when SMS won the Lincoln regional, the went on the road to Ohio State and promptly swept them in 2 games.

Lest we forget Michigans appearances in the CWS was a result of the regionalization of the tournament. Once regions disappeared, so did Northern schools frequent appearances...

All fair points.

Conference credibility will be an uphill battle, but one that Erstad seems willing to directly address through an "anyone, anywhere" scheduling philosophy. Indiana and Ohio State (and maybe Purdue) have also made massive investments in their facilities. Now, it is on the conference to reform their antiquated and self-imposed scholarship regulations.

Get those done and it looks like we're ready to play ball.

It's okay for you to be wrong. Only thing you can do is take the standings as it is now. Even if IU beats us but we win the league are you going to foolishly say they are better than us?

I have no problem admitting error, P-ville, when I'm wrong. Unfortunately this isn't one of those occasions. ;)

Both assessments are speculative, but your supposition that NU is better than a top-20 team b/c of standings half-way through conference play denies several realities, not to mention the opinions of myriad baseball experts.

Have a good night, p-vill.

Thanks.

Yes, I recall the last CWS participant as I attended that series ... Michigan had Barry Larkin and Chris Sabo (I still have the program, in fact).

But wow ... only two teams have appeared in Super Regional games (and lost the series) in the past 11 years. It's just one sorry conference.

I think they are better this year, but yes in years past the Big 10 has sucked. I think 1-2 teams will make the supers this year.
