The 2012 recruiting board is here.

[NOTE: Editorial will be moved to post #3 for space.]

In the future, to save space, the defense will likely be moved to post #2.

To start, I have estimated target numbers by position. The target numbers are strictly a guess and may not represent the actual target numbers. This looks to be another small class very similar to 2010. But I am predicting a class of 18-20 this year even though it seems obvious after last year that Bo Pelini is going to be fairly conservative as far as pushing the numbers which would seem to fit Nebraska for a couple of reasons—our redshirt program and our move to the Big 10. The Big 10 is very conservative on pushing numbers compared to many conferences and this could actually be a blessing for Nebraska as they join a conference that mirrors their recruiting philosophy more than the Big 12 ever did.

In the position numbers below, the minimum sum of every position adds up to 18. This leaves two more possible scholarships for my high-end 20 prediction. My feeling is WR, DE, & DB are the most likely positions to add one. I could also see us taking 2 TEs in this year’s class and we would likely not turn away a great fourth OL if the situation warrants. I could see us only taking only one DT and one QB and RB are not givens. Then there is the possibility of us taking a JUCO or two, a new staff is in place with a new coordinator, and there is a question on how the switch to the Big 10 conference will affect our targeting by position? This year is as wide open as I have seen it in awhile. We should know more after spring ball and I may be back to change the numbers a bit.

Top needs? If you look at my 3 year recruiting look thread, you can see that we will be hit hard by graduation after 2012 at TE and LB. I have been doing this for awhile and these are two of the bigger holes that I have seen in awhile. These two positions are HUGE priorities and we may end up taking a JUCO in this or next year’s class for one or both of these positions as well.

Third on the list would be WR and then DE and DB. These three positions feature a lot of young players on our roster who haven’t proven themselves yet. This will be a big spring for players to start either making a name for themselves or playing themselves out of the picture. I suspect that regardless of how things develop, we would like to get at least one great pass-rushing DE in this class.

OL will continue to be an ongoing priority. We will add to our numbers here.

Contrary to popular opinion, DT is not one of our top priorities. We appear to be stacked at that position for years to come. RB isn’t a huge priority and we will not take one unless he is a top target.

QB is hard to figure. We will recruit there but the numbers on our roster are rather fluid given that Bubba might go baseball and Jamal Turner could end up at WR. If someone transfers out, this position could be elevated in priority rather quickly.

The interesting thing to me is with the new staff and move to the Big 10, we will be shifting our emphasis on recruiting states. It is already visible. This year, I have added each recruit’s high school state to their data. Hopefully this will help illustrate the point.

All in all, we have some reseeding to do and then we will be shoring up the numbers across the board.

Not a bad position to be in. Let’s have a good class and keep moving in the right direction.

Numbers (stars, height, 40 time, etc.) are from Rivals. Players listed are confirmed to have had offers at one time (except those noted under “No offers:”).

Visited players in BOLD. Future visit players in BOLD ITALICS. Unsigned Nebraska prepsters in Green. Verbals linked to Rivals profile in Red.

Updated board with latest offers and Rivals 250 rankings.

Obviously, QB has become a much greater priority with the transfer of Green, the position switch of Turner, and Bubba Starling's baseball status. The offer list at QB is growing and shrinking. Growing in number and shrinking in terms of QB-size. Our new offense is obviously leaning towards smaller and quicker QBs.

Scout upgraded Michael Rose to a 4-star....to go along with his 4-star ratings from 247 and ESPN (#139 on ESPNU Top 150) only Rivals has him as a 3-star which seems to be a trend with them and long term commits (i.e. Tyler Moore).

Thus, Huskers with two 4-star commits to start the class in Rose and Wasterkamp....:)

Sam Cotton a 3-star rated TE/DE commits to Nebraska. Husker 2012 class is now up to three with 4-star rated LB Michael Rose, 4-star rated WR Jordan Westerkamp and Cotton. Remains to be seen which side of the ball Cotton will play however, he was recruited as a TE but is equally adept at DE.

I think all the Cotton boys stay on the offensive side of the ball....be cool if Sam plays as true freshmen and all 3 are on the field at the same time.

Sorry I am a bit late to the party. Computer down for weeks.

Sam Cotton . . . N! Check!
Rivals Top 100 DE Greg McMullen is N! . . . Check!

Updated ratings for Rose and Westerkamp (Cotton as well). Probably have some other things to catch up on.

Looking at #'s just wondering where we can pare off 2 from this list to get to 15.
QB 1
RB-0
WR-2
OL-3
TE-2
DE/DT-3
LB-3
DB-3
Sp teams-0

That is 17 total. Can't see us taking less than 3 OL (especially with 1 committing soon and Peat hopefully by the end and many other good ones we are in on). To me LB and DB are musts as 2012 we will lose a ton and need good bodies in the program 1 year to learn.

4-star OT Paul Thurston from Colorado, commits to Nebraska today. It has been a fantastic week for the Huskers on the recruiting front with the addition of Cotton, McMullen and Thurston. Nebraska now 5 verbal commits in June 2011 for the 2012 class which is awesome for a class that will probally not exceed 15 this year.

So Far:

Rose LB 4****
Westerkamp WR 4****
Cotton TE/DE 3***
McMullen 4****
Thurston 4****

Shaping up to be one heckuva class...:)
