I think the stuff with Mattison is probably being overblown. It's an undeniable fact that Michigan is right up there with Virginia, Texas, and the big three California state schools as the most prestigious and exclusive state universities in the country. I don't know what he got on the ACT, but the fact is he would have zero chance of getting into Michigan with a 3.1 GPA without football.

My guess is that Mattison was just trying to say that football has opened doors for this young man that wouldn't otherwise be open. Which is absolutely true. Maybe what Mattison said came out the wrong way. But he's a highly experienced recruiter who has been in thousands of living rooms just like Neal's, and he is a holdover from Hoke's staff, so it's not like he's working on a new sales pitch.

I'm really glad that Daishon is going to Nebraska, but given all the drama that has attended his recruiting process, I'm having a little trouble buying that a guy like Greg Mattison marched into his living room and said something that was all that offensive.

I agree. Maybe they really were (possibly unconsciously) favoring Nebraska and saw that comment as their final reason to stay.

Don't know a thing about Mattison, but tend to agree with your analysis. Michigan is one of the best schools in the country, no question. However, there is a "Michigan attitude" that just rubs people the wrong way when it comes out. Call it elitist, superior...whatever, but it's just NOT attractive to many. The messenger is probably clueless about how the message was perceived because he's surrounded by like minded people. In this case, there were much better ways (and tones) to sell the excellent education he'd receive and the opportunities that education might offer.

I've gotten that from Michigan alums and from So Cal alums.....two peas in a pod.

Neal will certainly get a lot more mileage out of his radio interview than he would have had with a hat ceremony. :)

I understand the point Mattison was making, and it wasn't meant to be insulting obviously. But really, it's not a point I'd want to sell to football jocks.

"Come to Michigan! You'll be surrounded by students much smarter than you but since you're an athlete, we'll let you in!"

I agree. I wasn't too high on him until listening to him and his father this morning. They impressed me.

Sweet. Though it is telling of today's generation where a long-time commit has a radio show press conference thingy to commit.......to the same school.......

Lol, ain't that the truth. Welcome Daishion Neal, glad you made the right choice.
