If I can be honest, I think this is getting overblown by Daishon. Michigan wanted him. The coach probably did say something like "being good at football is giving you a chance to do something you otherwise wouldn't be able to do". I really don't think the coach was saying "just by talking to you, you're pretty dumb". And I know no one is saying that is what was said. But the coach basically had Daishons grades and ACT score and probably said "look, if you're a regular student, we couldn't get you in. But I'm glad you're sweet at football because it's not even an issue."

Now, the verbiage used or the tone is pretty important here, but all I'm saying is one side of the story really sucks for a particular school here. I'm not saying Daishon is lying, or that the coach didn't do this. But quite honestly, Clinkscales could have went this route last year with us. We basically told him he couldn't get in school at Nebraska. Now, he also lied about passing a class he didn't. But the point remains that I think it's best both parties move on from this crap storm.

This is reasonably stated, ***..... Daishon and dad should start distancing themselves from it.....and Michigan would be smart to ignore it.

Even if everything you say is true it was still a stupid statement. I have attended a few management training classes in my day. One thing they teach you is how to discuss potential negatives without sounding negative. No matter how you slice it this could and will come off as negative. That said. I hope they continue to use it and piss more people off.

I disagree...

A lot of parents if a coach said "son, football is giving you an opportunity to do something you otherwise may not be able to, go to school at the University of Michigan", a lot of parents would make their kid take a serious look at a school they couldn't get into but an exception is being made.

He said it to the wrong family and didn't do his research, but my parents would have loved that pitch if Stanford would have came in and said that to me and made me take a serious look at them.

The theory is true. The way to say it is. "Son there are very few schools that make future employers stand up and say we want this guy. Michigan is one of those schools. Your degree from UM will pay dividends long after your playing days are over."

See how I said the same thing without ever mentioning he would not get in otherwise.

That's fine... But that's a different pitch than what im talking about. Im talking about a pitch where a kid gets an opportunity because of football he would not otherwise have. Your example you're just talking about how good the school is, something you would say to a Matt Snyder who has great grades anyway to sway him from Nebraska. My pitch I'm talking about is letting a kid know that a great opportunity presents itself that otherwise wouldn't because of football.

My parents would have loved that and MADE me take a visit. I for sure wouldn't have been offended, I would have had excitement running thru me...

Comes down to knowing your audience. UM said they did a background check and everything on Neal, you think they would have spent a few minutes figuring out what he and his dad (clearly an influential figure in the decision process) were like.

I think this is one where we are going to agree to disagree. I will give the idea that the message could be taken different ways. I am just saying you need to make sure you understand your audience before you use a statement like that.

Bottom line: It is national college football news that a Nebraska recruit, and his dad, felt insulted by a Michigan Asst Coach and was shown the door. THAT is what happened, right or wrong, Dashion and his dad being overly-sensitive, or right on, that is the bottom line. Coulda, woulda, shoulda doesn't mean anything right now. And, I, for one, am extremely overjoyed with the end results, both in Neal being "N" and Mechicken/Hairbaugh getting some egg on their face!! WIN=WIN!!!!

I'm just saying no one knows what the actual message was. And I know Daishon and listened to him say "the fans were mad at me for looking around but they are the ones that got the coach fired" amongst other comments. Take things with a grain of salt.

I 100 percent know that that pitch has worked on inner-city kids before at high academic institutions. And I'm just glad that Jared Tomich and Michael Booker didn't take the route Daishon did when legendary Tom Osborne said it to them...

Agree with them not knowing their audience. That's what happens when you come in with an offer with less then 2 weeks before nsd and with the large number of late offers they've thrown out there. Hate to say it, but if this was next year and mich had a full year to recruit him.....

I listened to a few minutes of the kid and his dad on the radio yesterday and have to say I wasn't real impressed by the attitude of either. Not exactly the type of kid or family I'd like to have to deal with from a coaching stand point, but it is a huge position of need so it in this case I guess you have to take a chance.

Elite academic institutions regularly admit otherwise marginal students who possess unique attributes, in order to enhance the academic and college experience for all of their students. Sometimes the "unique attribute" is unique ability in computer science or mathematics, sometimes it is unique ability in musical performance and sometimes it is unique ability in playing football. Or it could be something else. Clearly Daishon's unique attribute is his ability and potential in playing football. If I were recruiting him to Michigan, Stanford, Northwestern, Cal, Vanderbilt, Notre Dame, UCLA, etc......my pitch would sound something like this:

1. Michigan (for example) is an outstanding academic institution and having a degree from Michigan will open many doors for you after your football days are over.
2. If we didn't think you could do the academic work, we wouldn't be recruiting you.
3. This is a unique academic opportunity that is being presented to you.
4. We'll support you in such a way that you'll have the greatest possible opportunity to be successful both on and off the field.

I don't think it is necessary to tell a recruit that the opportunity presented might not be available if it weren't for their football playing ability. If they asked me, "If it weren't for my abilities as a football player, would I be able to get into Michigan?", I'd give them an honest answer and then tell the player and his family, again, that if I didn't think the player could do the work, we wouldn't be recruiting them. When recruiting, it's best to avoid presenting negative information.

preception is reality !!! Glad his arrogant Michigan ass was shown the door !! I think i believe DN and his dad over what YOU think happened ***. Why are you such a mechicken fan ??

This post is beyond silly.....if anything you owe *** an apology for the last sentence.....he simply stated an opinion (note in a civil manner unlike you) the way he saw things and he has a right and is entitled to do so.....and I think if you actually stop and think for a moment there is some truth in what he is saying....and like many of us have said including me.....Michigan is at a disadvantage here in that they can't comment on this until NSD....and even then it would not be wise to do so for all the obvious reasons....

More than likely we will never really know the whole truth....but I agree with *** time for both parties to move on....

Um..where is this best school in the country crap coming from. This is amazing to me, as this is the first I've heard of that.

Michigan a good school, sure ok, best in the country!??? Um no, not even close by any standard.

Michigan is probably on the top end of the BIGTEN, in the area of Iowa, below Northwestern

Someone is seriously delusional if Michigan is the same sentence of a true academic center of excellence on the national scale.

I personally know over a hundred extremely talented bright young people, over 30 years, and unless they have ties to Michigan, very few would ever consider Michigan their top choice for academics.

Where's Cardinal when we need him? Standford would fit the description of a top elite acedemic school.

Michigan would easily rank in the top ten of large state universities, and probably in the top 5. It is the second best school in the Big Ten, behind only Northwestern, and not by much. It is a very difficult school to get into, especially for out of state applicants. Its peers are UC-Berkeley and UCLA, UT-Austin, and Virginia.

As much as it pains me to say it, Michigan absolutely is an elite academic university.
