McKewons Article, will another analyst be enough?

I think one is on the way.
Yep. He had a rough game the one time I saw him but he can kick the ball as far as you need him to.

He is a perfect example of what needs to be happening at Nebraska when the team/specialists are humming. Come in while kicker on scholarship has the job on lock down. Show in practice to the coaches you are capable of getting it done. Nebraska gets a free year out of you while you are still a walk-on and the starting kicker, they put you on scholarship after you prove yourself on the field. Still boggles my mind we went away from that model and just started handing out scholarships straight out of high school. Not a coincidence how bad our special teams have been in that time frame IMO.

So to play devil's advocate here, even the NFL will draft a kicker/punter high in the early rounds. I don't know why but they do. Doesn't always work out, but sometimes you take a flyer. It wasn't like we were giving a scholarship to a low rated kicker, theses were some of the best kickers/punters out there (if you buy into Kohl being the premier evaluator of talent).

I do agree though with going back to the old model, what they have been doing is not working.

I think comparing what the NFL does to college is a bit dangerous. But even if we do that... 7 of the top 10 kickers on this list went undrafted.

Further, I stated this before but the 2019 first and second team all B1G kickers were walk-ons. Our first team all B1G kicker for 2020 is a walk-on.

Back to the original statement. I don't really mind it when you get in a bind. But we had a nice factory going and then all of a sudden just blew it up. Heck, we even started using a scholarship on long snappers. Again, there's probably 50 kids in Nebraska that could do that. If we can just get back to what we were doing it will be fine. Our last two scholarships we used on kickers were Barrett Pickering and Caleb Lightbourn, both of which were top 5 at their spots.

Just get back to the old model. Tough to do when you don't have a special teams coach which may be what put us in this predicament I suppose.

I was going to bring the same thing up but I didn't want to stir the hornets nest.

lol no worries. And I just edited my original post but in 2019, the first and second all-conference kickers were walk-ons. In 2020 our first team kicker was a walk-on and so was the third team kicker from Iowa.

You do have to have a pretty good system in place which we don't have yet.

So we were scared that they were going to attempt a pretty difficult play of catching a super high kick then throwing it backwards to a guy on the other side of the field, so we decided to just kick it straight to the guy we didn't want them to get the ball to? Am I comprehending what I just read correctly?

You got it. That is absolutely correct. Just unbelievable. I'll say it till i'm blue in the face - this staff thinks we are better than we are.

I mean really - how could we have predicted that our guys who can't get off blocks ... couldn't get off blocks? And how on earth could we have known that a block in the back wouldn't be called? Because that never happens.

Checkers and Chess. Against RUTGERS.

I do think you are right if we can get back to that system of yesterday, but I would not have an issue if every once in a while you take a flyer on someone. Maybe a transfer portal kicker/punter would be ok to look at if they have demonstrated they are worthy, but agreed, maybe avoid giving a HS kicker/punter a scholie.

I say this somewhat in jest but when you haven't consistently filled your 85 man scholarship number is it that big a deal that we offer what evaluations tell us are outstanding kickers, punters, and long snappers. I get what you are saying though. If you don't have the resources dedicated to developing these positions you almost have to get the cream of the crop. So far we are striking out. I think you roadmap to consistent improvement would be to have a dedicated coach and use the local talent pool to man those positions. It certainly makes sense and would be beneficial if we fill the 2 or so scholarships that might open up. No benefit gained though if we continue to self impose recruiting limits.

Any punting list that completely leaves Jake Bailey off is not a good list. But I digress

What's mind boggling to me is why we put two walkon(one is now on scholarship) WR's on the kickoff coverage team? How do their skills translate? I also get the just kick it out of the endzone and find a guy who can do that, but what about when you have to kick into a strong cold wind? You have to be able to get off blocks and tackle. I refuse to believe that two WR's are the best choice for that.
