Let's talk about Dedrick Mills

Haven't read the whole thread so not sure if this has been stated yet, but I noticed he had the most success with the stretch plays they ran to the outside. O-line blocked well and receivers were able to maintain their blocks more consistently as well. But IMO the stretch plays we were running really suited Mills, more so than the inside runs.

that's a good point. I wonder if the stretch plays give Mills more time to read and adjust to the hole and don't require him to be as patient as the IZ would?

Also the receivers were really solid with their blocking this game

Think we probably could have used him in the 2nd half?

Seemed to be doing pretty well in the 1st.

I have no proof, just what I remember seeing, but I believe he was limping on a few series. Could have been just a minor ankle sprain, who knows. I think if he would have been able to go, we would have seen him in there.

That is not a stretch play, that is outside zone read. That is the same thing that Minnesota killed Nebraska with. Its really good zone blocking, but Mills saw the running lanes really well.

Outside zone is a good play against a 3-4. Not as good against 4-3. In many cases inside zone read is better against 4-3, but when executed well like the video posted it will work against anything.

I'm curious how it makes a difference to you on outside zone when a team runs 3-4 or 4-3.

Just my opinion, but I think it is easier to set the edge against a 3-4 on outside zone read.

The 4-3 and 3-4 end up looking like the same limited number of alignments. Your look might have a Y-call, wide call, or doubles. You are one man short to run true gapping, which means everyone takes a hole. You may actively have one guy anchor on two gaps. Suh is a good example that allowed another guy free because he could play both gaps across from a guy. An the anchor can be an inside pair of gaps, or the unobtainium hybrid of C gap and contain. Some seven man fronts are all head up technique, but that's pretty old fashioned and more of a professional thing.

On the college level you see a lot of flex looks with eagle on one side opposite the read. Your EMOL on read side would anchor head up on the TE (or H) and be responsible for C gap, but also contain the QB. If he gets a double-team he cannot give an inch. Not difficult for DE, but asking a lot from mediocre OLBs. (Which is why OLB demands a top athlete.) This frees up the other three guys on the DL to shoot their gaps aggressively.

If I have great athletes then I'm going six man fronts with two anchors. If you can beat a team with impunity then it gives you massive flexibility. But I don't think we are there yet with recruiting. Definitely need a strong OLB and the weakside rush specialist roles before we'll see Chinander's defense look like what the 13-0 UCF team had.

The main difference between 3-4 and 4-3 is personnel groups, which cascades down to affecting coverage. You can only get so many looks out of the seven man front. But the seven man fronts are one or two substitutions away from almost every coverage under the Sun.
