They engaged in an act, knowing that if they were caught they would sit out, hurting their team. Even if one wishes to make the argument that weed does not hurt their performance, sitting on the bench certainly will.

It is true that this type of activity is not uncommon. The average team engages in this type of activity. The average team will also be sitting at home watching the playoffs.
