B1G Quarterback Quandary

That I agree with. Losing Wan’Dale and McCaffrey sucks. No doubt. There’s no way to spin it. I don’t know that we always have to be looking for someone to blame. Can we get better at retention? Of course. I think Frost agrees and that’s why we’re going to see a change in the Development position.

I do feel better knowing that we also used the portal to our advantage and got. wide receiver in Toure that probably helps us more than Wan’Dale (no disrespect to WR1). And we got Stepp who will be a huge addition to this offense. Kolarevic at LB is a tackling machine. And we’re probably not done yet.
Ya, I think we just need to be better and a lot of this stuff goes away.

If Toure is even half the Wan'Dale production that is unreal. But agree, great pickup.

I like Stepp, he needs to stay healthy. The thing with him is he is MIlls 2.0 with a little worse hands so we need to really commit to the run. Can we do that?

Love the Northern Iowa kid, that said, we will see what happens when he moves up a level. Honas and Reimer are our starters for sure in 2021. When you move up a level things get dicey. We had FBS starters transfer here and not even sniff the field.

Long story short, I like our transfer portal additions, they give us some college experience with some college production.

I really don’t want to sound disrespectful to Warner because he’s a great kid, but he did the right thing for himself and did us a favor by transferring. The fact that he was a captain speaks to his character, not his ability. He was not going to get playing time in 2021. I wish him the best.
To me it doesn't matter who the player is, a season ago he was voted a captain and now he doesn't want to be here to see it through. So either the team was a horrible judge of who they want leading them, or there is something going on that isn't right. It may be solely about PT, but warner came here as a walk-on so PT was never gauranteed anyways.

Just my :Sign2cents: ( probably closer to a dollar now)

It’s about playing time. He wants to go somewhere that he can play. Can’t fault him or anyone for that.

Took a long hike this afternoon & on the way back, rather than think more about gamestop, started thinking about something less confusing - QB transfers. & Why is DONU the only team impacted by this ;) ... Obviously, I began by thinking about Nebraska... & where Luke might wind up. Then thought where might his brother Dylan McCaffrey (formerly at michigan) end up... of course when I think of michigan, my mind always thinks of Ohio State & thought, wow, sure would've been nice had Joe Burrow transferred to DONU from the Buckeyes, must have left quite a hole - whoops Justin Fields, who transferred in to tOSU from Georgia. Surely must be a rarity in the SEC, then remembered Tualia Taguvaloa is transferring to Maryland (also Udinski, a QB from VMI) & Lance LeGendre is transferring out of Maryland. Rutgers seems to be a foster home for transfer QBs (Vedral), then I remembered that Will Levis is transferring from PSU & Rocky Lombardi left MSU. Well, we must be the only ones impacted in our division, then I remembered Peyton Ramsey, who transferred from Indiana to NW, who also just got Hunter Johnson from Clemson... & Brandon Peters transferred from Michigan to Illinois, seem to recall Purdue getting a QB Austin Burton (from UCLA) & read where an Iowa backup QB transferred out (Peyton Mansell)...+ Jack Coen from Wisconsin is in the portal - which made me think all the way back to grad transfer Russell Wilson ...& 2011 when the grad transfer / immediate eligibility all began - how time flies ... no longer having to sit out a year seems to have been a catalyst for all transfers. Thankfully I was almost home as my brain started to hurt just thinking of our old rival OU - Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, Jalen Hurts, Trevor Knight, Mordecai, Morris...:O O::Biggrin:

certainly not a comprehensive list, but my unscientific conclusion - transfer troubles appear ubiquitous & not always a bad thing.

Some things in this list are different than others.

MSU QB Lombardi left because they got QB Anthony Russo from Temple. Basically, he kind of got pushed out unless he wanted to stay and be the backup QB that is.

LenGendre left UMD and transferred to Louisiana (the program formerly known as Louisiana Lafayette) because Taulia Tagovailoa beat him out. He started in their final game against Rutgers, didn't play well and got benched. https://www.baltimoresun.com/sports...0201224-jzbdjsytgvgdznhb56bexcetbu-story.html

The Will Levis transfer is really interesting, especially because he's reportedly heavily considering Kentucky. IMO Levis was a better QB than their staeter last year (and I wasn't very happy to see him enter the game against the Huskers) but like LM isn't considered a great passer. Because Kentucky's presumptive 2020 starter at QB Nik Scalzo will apparently be back from a torn ACL I can only think that the reason Levis may head to Kentucky is because he believes the new OC they hired from the LA Rams can help him get to the NFL. Which is the same reason Wan'dale decided to sign with Kentucky.

I agree it's ubiquitous because IMO the portal is all about finding a better situation for a guy to get himself into the NFL.

Jack Coan is with Notre Dame. He's the odds on favorite to be their starting QB. Good get. He's the type of QB I'd like to see at Nebraska.
Of course JC would end up at Notre Dame ;) ... the previous staff pursued him (& frankly I was pulling for him to be the QB in that 2017 class), prior to the Calibraska fascination (folks tend to forget the CA infatuation & subsequent exodus preceded the current FL exodus - but I digress).

As for that type of QB, yes, perhaps things could evolve that way in the future... if folks allow such evolution to occur. Reminds me of another transfer (continuing theme) from Cal, Mr Ferragamo who led a more pro set pass heavy era in DONU's past (Humm, Quinn, Mathison)... Dr Tom learned, adapted and evolved the offense over time for a more dual threat QB, enter Turner Gill & more focus on option football.

I don't know the current answer, I'm just tired of hitting the panic button... & ultimately the reset button.

IMO the "Calibraska" exodus was different in that those guys signed to play in Riley's offense. Although, I'll grant you that the first one out the door, Keyshawn Jr., was weird. As was the reaction to it.

If you have two QBs of equal caliber and they're in the same class (say they are Juniors) and one sees he's not going to get much playing time, I can understand the desire to transfer. If you have two QBs who are not in the same class (say one is a true Junior and the other is a redshirt Freshman) and the redshirt Freshman is the supposed eventual successor to the Junior and the redshrit Freshman transfers, that's a head scratcher.

Each case is different. Just because it happens a lot doesn't necessarily mean it it's nothing to worry about.

I tend to wonder if COVID had more of an effect than we thought. When LM committed, AM looked like someone who was headed for the NFL after his Junior campaign.
Adrian now has 2 more years of eligibility.
If not for Covid, this would be AM's last year and the keys could have been Luke's next year (In his mind). I honestly don't know if 'everyone' gets an extra year of eligibility or just Juniors and Seniors...

I believe it’s everyone.

IMO people can downplay his ability or playing time all they want, but losing Warner is a big deal. Captains should not be transferring from the program.
I really agree with @ShortSideOption here.
All of the other people on top of the three I mentioned are window dressing. Robinson, McCaffrey, and the 2020 recruits are the issue.
Warner did well for us but I really think he saw that he was going to get passed this year. I think he wanted to go somewhere he could be the man. If he goes to a D II etc. he has a chance to be really good.

I get the fact he was a captain, but at the end of the day if that guys starting for you we are in trouble. I can see both sides, he was a captain and bolted. But i've always been upset when contributors are taking off or people that can't even make it to fall camp. I was hard on Bo for Suttles and Brown, i'm hard on Frost for the 2020 guys.

Speaking of Calibraska, Bookie has entered the portal. Kind of strange.

Are all of threes transferees working on a bona fide degree, or are they just playing pro ball? The reason I ask is, ordinarily, P5 schools are going to be pretty rigid on what courses they will accept, and I highly doubt that ANY accept junior or senior level coursework from another institution.
Now I realize the concept of a student athlete is often a complete farce and rules are made to broken. I’m just curious if the schools are even pretending to uphold the student athlete ideal any more, or if the whole deal has denigrated into pro sports, the heck with the details.
No.....in regards to your last sentence.
