Where I grew up in Southern California a USC degree is the butt of jokes from the UC community as we often like to call it: 'its the worst degree big money can buy'.....UCLA is a far superior academic institution as is the UC system as a whole....now Stanford is very highly thought of and rightfully so....and the respect is mutual in a fun sort of way....

Anyway I suspect Mattison and Michigan will be a little more careful in the future how they phrase things in a recruits home....

No question UCLA is a better school academically than USC. Because it is a private school and in the largest megalopolis in the country, though. USC's alumni network is extremely strong there.

I agree it is....lot of $$ in that school....and lot of kids who parents are doctors, actors etc. go there....so 100% agree...

You and I agree....would be beyond foolish to comment on it on NSD or at the banquet....

Keeping this story alive is not a good move for Michigan. If I were them, I'd let it go but doubt they'll be able to help themselves. Some folks just don't get how bad it makes them look to those outside their little kingdom. It's those outside their little kingdom they should be trying to attract.

Recruiting is a nasty business and some of the tactics used by various coaching staffs are interesting to say the least....

Bottom line is he is a Husker in a position of need....and this the good news....:)

Hopefully his body grows into carrying that ego of his.....10 ft, 500-lbs should do it.

If I can be honest, I think this is getting overblown by Daishon. Michigan wanted him. The coach probably did say something like "being good at football is giving you a chance to do something you otherwise wouldn't be able to do". I really don't think the coach was saying "just by talking to you, you're pretty dumb". And I know no one is saying that is what was said. But the coach basically had Daishons grades and ACT score and probably said "look, if you're a regular student, we couldn't get you in. But I'm glad you're sweet at football because it's not even an issue."

Now, the verbiage used or the tone is pretty important here, but all I'm saying is one side of the story really sucks for a particular school here. I'm not saying Daishon is lying, or that the coach didn't do this. But quite honestly, Clinkscales could have went this route last year with us. We basically told him he couldn't get in school at Nebraska. Now, he also lied about passing a class he didn't. But the point remains that I think it's best both parties move on from this crap storm.

I'm okay with this. It's Michigan after all. ;)

Agree. Best to let it go.

Agree. The message that has been attributed to the Michigan coach does not strike me as outrageous or offensive.

Don't know a thing about Mattison, but tend to agree with your analysis. Michigan is one of the best schools in the country, no question. However, there is a "Michigan attitude" that just rubs people the wrong way when it comes out. Call it elitist, superior...whatever, but it's just NOT attractive to many. The messenger is probably clueless about how the message was perceived because he's surrounded by like minded people. In this case, there were much better ways (and tones) to sell the excellent education he'd receive and the opportunities that education might offer.

Um..where is this best school in the country crap coming from. This is amazing to me, as this is the first I've heard of that.

Michigan a good school, sure ok, best in the country!??? Um no, not even close by any standard.

Michigan is probably on the top end of the BIGTEN, in the area of Iowa, below Northwestern

Someone is seriously delusional if Michigan is the same sentence of a true academic center of excellence on the national scale.

I personally know over a hundred extremely talented bright young people, over 30 years, and unless they have ties to Michigan, very few would ever consider Michigan their top choice for academics.

Where's Cardinal when we need him? Standford would fit the description of a top elite acedemic school.

Michigan is the #29 "National University". Not bad. Among "Public Universities" only Cal, Virginia and UCLA are ahead of them. Among public universities they are elite. The top 3 "National Universities" are Princeton, Harvard and Yale. Stanford is tied for 4th with Columbia.
