Conference Buy-outs

Tv viewership alone should be enough to keep us in the B1G. From the numbers I've seen we are top 20-25 nationally with a losing team, ahead of newcomer UCLA, current members like NW, Indiana, Rutgers, and rumored targets like Stanford, Oregon, Duke, etc.

If expansion really is about the money, we aren't going anywhere.
I believe it is which does give me some assurances but

1) Maryland and Rutgers joined in 2014
2) Huskers in 2011
3) Penn State in 1990 (that's 32 years of B1G membership)

-----

4) Next is Michigan State - 1950 (72 years)

After that is Michigan 1917 (105 years).
All 6 other West division schools date back to the 1890's

We belong to a conference where members see themselves more in common with the Ivy League conference than the SEC conference. There is a level of arrogance and condescension. We are viewed as a bunch of hillbillies from Hooterville.

But are they wrong? ;)

Which are many of the reasons I mentioned in another thread that Nebraska doesn’t really fit in this conference like it did the Big8/12. I was vilified for that. We won’t even get into the political beliefs in the BIG, as a whole. Everything seems out of whack, but considering what’s happened, it’s probably where it needs to be as well.

Fair enough. The phrasing came across differently to me.

I think I’ll bow out of this thread anyway, as I don’t really see the value in exploring this hypothetical. What was the last time a conference expelled a member? If Penn State and MSU could weather their horrible crises, I think Nebraska having disappointing results on the field can also be weathered. Nebraska’s sins look pretty small in comparison.
If football success is tied to remaining in the BIG there's more than Nebraska that had better start packing imo.

Excellent point. Indiana, Purdue, Northwestern, Illinois, Maryland, etc….Nebraska still has a top 5-8 program of all time. It also owns the winningest stretch in college football history, 1962-2002. 41 years of winning. No other program has a stretch even close to that. 0 losing seasons. The next closest program during that 41 years won 40+ less games. 83% win percentage. This gets lost sometimes when ranking all time programs. I mean, this is 4 decades, not 15-20 years. Significant.

2008-2014 was very solid. Won bowl games, and should have beaten Georgia twice instead of once. Also, should have 2 Big 12 titles as well. It’s all about the coach, not the program as to why NU has struggled. ‘They gotta adjust to us’. Remember?
I'm not sure why Frost is so often misquoted on this particular item as folks always leave out the "I'm hoping..." that preceded the rest of the phrase that was actually:

“I’m hoping the Big Ten has to modify their system for us,”

Its either intentional to make this quote look worse or alot of people failed to hear firsthand or actually read the quote themselves and just parrot the misleading section header from Robin Washut - "Frost: Big Ten will have to adapt to us"

To be clear and avoid the obvious rebuttals that focus on Frost's record, I am only defending him from continually being mis-quoted.

You’re right, but that’s not how it really came across. Not to mention, all the other things he said about previous coaches at NU and adm. Don’t forget the ‘they better get us now’ quote either. The way he said things did NOT come across as respectful to others. They were direct shots.

Husker fan base has consistently ranked between 9th to 11th nationally in most publications. Meaning we have a large nationwide TV audience and a full stadium. Compare Nebraska to MOST BIG schools like NW, Rutgers, Maryland, IL.. etc etc etc. Huskers aren't getting kicked out of the BIG and it's honestly preposterous to suggest it would even be considered.

Here is the list of the "Top 50 most watched College Football Teams in 2015-2019"
We were 22 over all and 7th in the BIG with a losing team.

Thus not likely a candidate to be sent packing just due to TV ratings alone.

However, never under rate how much the BIG and its commissioner DO NOT like us, so anything is possible, especially where $100 Million dollars is concerned.

Like I said, it’s a manipulative bunch of hogwash crap all designed for prestige and money.

You might as well criticize the entire American university system since the 1800's. Small towns all over the country sponsored private universities to increase their prestige so people would move there. The currency of large universities is prestige. Just about everything that university presidents focus on is designed to either protect their university's current prestige or to increase its prestige. Those who cause their universities to lose prestige get fired.

Come to think of it, sports is the same way.

I suspect a lot of those higher viewing numbers are generated directly because of the success of a teams program. If a team is winning they are getting the best time slots and other factors that would push their numbers higher. Obviously winning teams are going to have more viewers. I'll bet very few if any teams have as crappy W-L record as Nebraska over past 10 years but averaged 1.51M viewers? How many crappy 11 AM starts has Nebraska had as opposed to prime spots given to teams like OSU or Bama? I understand why better teams get the prime TV times but it's also a huge factor in how many viewers are watching them. Huskers start winning and I'll bet our viewing numbers will greatly increase.
