No butter on the toast but butter was used in the sauce.
Sauce was butter, self rising flour and milk. No salt except for what was in the dried beef. Also a pinch of cayenne pepper.
My beloved father in law (May he rest in peace) used to call it “crap on a shingle“ from his army days
You ever tried creamed eggs on toast? Same sauce but put sliced up hard boiled eggs in it.
