With the discussion of whether it may take a mid-major head coach or top-level assistant to turn a program around, here's a quick look at the previous job for each head coach of the current Top 25:

I don't think any definitive conclusions can be drawn from this, but it is interesting IMO.

A few "home grown" assistants there.

A couple where it would be helpful to go furhter back. Roy Williams was an assistant at UNC before taking the HC job at KU.

At quick glance, it seems like most of the assistants were promoted from within for successful programs. For the most part, it seems (that on this list) schools look to hire coaches who have established themselves as the head man, even if on a lower level.

Obviously with guys like Roy, it would be his stint as a UNC assistant (1978-88) that would be the key item before his hire at Kansas.
