Verduzco

What is funny is that we heard Riley and Langsdorf say every day how important it was to eliminate turnovers, yet they still started two TO prone QB’s in the nth degree in both TA and Tanner Lee. They were all talk, no action. Neither of those guys should have played with how lax they played with turnovers. Let’s hope Frost and QB Coach V don’t let that happen. If their starting QB is a turnover machine,,give the job to the backup for awhile so they know it is NOT going to be accepted.

They sure did. Guess it was the INT's that killed us.

Year Fumbles Lost
2012 35 22
2013 32 16
2014 27 13
2015 11 6
2016 16 5
2017 12 2

Year Interceptions
2015 21

How did total carries change?

The fumble rate was going to change with the change in offensive style. I'm sure coaching played some part, but the more they went away from option football, the lower the fumble number would be.

Labels aren't too clear. That second column is total number of fumbles, and the third column is fumbles resulting in change of possession.
I meant, how many total carries were there each year? I'm guessing the number of carries was much higher in the Pelini years, which would explain at least some of the extra fumbles.

So funny that some can't even give credit to the last staff where it is due. The numbers show that it is not an offensive change but better ball security coaching.

Carries per fumble
2012 18.9
2013 18.25
2014 21.74
2015 45.09
2016 36.68
2017 30

Carries per lost fumble
2012 30.09
2013 36.5
2014 45.15
2015 82.66
2016 104.6
2017 184

It is okay to admit that the last staff with all their failures might have done a few things right...

So this thread - to which I contributed a false conclusion by referring to Nebraska as Turnover U - perfectly illustrates one of Einstein’s maxims:

Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted.

Nebraska’s offense certainly could not be counted on in 2017, yet it wasn’t fumbles on running plays that hurt them. It was everything else...

Don't forget that TO's are also a byproduct of a crappy O-line.

Professor Verduzco likes to use the word "friggen" a lot. I am sure that offends some people. It offends some fans of Tom Osborne who never heard him use a stronger term than "dadgummit." And it offends some fans of Bob Devaney who know that Bob would never use that term but would instead always use the real term.

I agree that ball security got better got better under Riley/Davis, but I don't know that the Carries per Fumble stat proves that it was coaching, and not an offensive change that was responsible for less fumbles.

It is an undeniable truth that going away from option football leads to less fumbles.
