WEST LAFAYETTE - After missing the 2019 season after undergoing ACL surgery, Purdue defensive tackle Lorenzo Neal announced Friday he's returning to the program.
But if Neal is healthy and ready, Purdue's defensive line will be a force to deal with. The play of freshman end George Karlaftis and the solid season turned in by Derrick Barnes at the Leo position (hybrid end/linebacker) gives the Boilermakers a starting point to turn things around.
If Neal returns close to 100 percent, it gives Purdue a legitimate starter at defensive tackle that opponents have to prepare for and it adds to the depth. It allows Anthony Watts, Lawrence Johnson, Branson Deen and Jack Sullivan to play more effectively without the heavy load of numerous snaps.
Purdue will be a great test for Nebraska in the first game next season.
Elijah Sindelar and Rondale Moore both missed most of the 2019 season with injuries. Purdue still managed to remain competitive minus their starting QB (thanks to the #2 and #3 QB both performing well) and their top offensive weapon in Moore. Both are also due to return for the 2020 season. The Boilermakers will be one of those teams that will have the potential to make a big leap next season.
