Lincoln -- James Palmer Jr. scored 18 of his game-high 29 points in the second half, as No. 25 (Coaches) Nebraska improved to 3-0 on the season with a convincing 80-57 victory over Seton Hall Wednesday night in the Gavitt Tipoff Games.
Palmer shook off a slow start and shined in the second half, as his 3-pointer sparked the decisive 9-2 Husker run after Seton Hall pulled to within 44-42 with 13:32 remaining and helped build a nine-point lead, at 53-44, after a Thomas Allen 3-pointer.

Seton Hall got to within 57-48 after a Michael Nzei basket with just under 10 minute remaining, but could not cut into the Husker lead in the last 10 minutes, as Nebraska stretched out the margin in the final few minutes.

Behind the play of Palmer and fellow seniors Isaac Copeland Jr. (18 points, 10 rebounds) and Glynn Watson Jr. (14 points, eight assists), the Huskers outscored the Pirates 36-15 down the stretch to pick up their 14th straight win at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The Huskers host Seton Hall in the Gavitt Tipoff Games matchup, part of the fourth-annual Gavitt Tipoff Games series between the Big Ten and the Big East. It is named in honor of Hall of Famer Dave Gavitt, founder of the Big East.

Nebraska will be looking for its first-ever win in the series, following trips to Villanova (2015) and St. John's (2017).

The Huskers, who are 2-0 and ranked 25th in the most recent USA Today coaches poll, took control early in an 87-35 win over Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday. James Palmer Jr. had 17 points, as the Huskers shot 56 percent and put six players in double figures. NU used runs of 22-0 and 22-2 to build a 36-point halftime lead. The Huskers also limited Southeastern Louisiana, which won 22 games and played in the NIT in 2017-18, to just 27 percent shooting and forced 25 turnovers.

Palmer (17.0 ppg) and fellow senior Glynn Watson Jr. (17.5 ppg) lead a balanced attack, as the Huskers feature four players averaging double figures and three more averaging at least eight points per game. Much of that has been because of the two blowouts, as no Husker is averaging more than 23 minutes per game.

Seton Hall comes into Wednesday's game with a 1-0 record after blowing out Wagner, 89-49, in its season opener on Nov. 6. Myles Powell led all scorers with a 30-point performance, hitting 10-of-13 shots from the field, including five 3-pointers. As a team, Seton Hall shot 52 percent and held Wagner to just 32 percent shooting. SHU played its second exhibition game on Friday, topping New Haven, 73-62 behind a 20-point effort from Myles Cale.

The Skinny: This is a Seton Hall team with a lot of new pieces after graduating one of their best recruiting classes in recent history. Kevin Willard is a noted "gritty' and defensive minded coach so you'll see his new squad try to dominate the boards, make the Huskers work in the half court, and try to run in transition as much as possible for easy baskets. In some regards the Pirates' lack of continuity helps them as the Huskers excel at scouting and can struggle against the unknown. Seton Hall has had 8 days to prepare plus last season's worth of game tape if you're looking for something else to worry about. However, you cannot simulate the crowd that should be present tonight as Seton Hall has been playing in front of the amount of people the Huskers bring out to a practice. It's not hard to imagine the noise rattling the Pirates at times.

What does a 3pt defending team like Nebraska run against a limited 3pt shooting team who will probably look to run inside tonight? Look for a decent amount of 1-3-1 and an experienced Nebraska team to switch defenses at will. The Huskers should generate easy points as well from the shaky PG timeshare that the Hall rolls out. On offense have you noticed that the Huskers have come out firing 3s the first couple of games? A lot of defenses will give this to you to start the game and in addition to it being an efficient way to score it serves the purpose of loosening up the defense even if we're not making them. Is this the game where we start hitting them?

The Huskers are more talented, more experienced and have the sort of killer instinct you haven't seen since the Terran Petteway era. Look for the Huskers to make a statement tonight.

Prediction: Nebraska 82 - Seton Hall 68

SHU could be an interesting test, but they really lack players with road experience. I look at the roster, and while I don’t know how their rotation looks, they have some pretty good size inside if they would choose to go bigger. That might slow down Palmer and Watson penetrating, and force us to make 3s. They don’t have a Roby or Copeland match though, which could be the difference.
