My favorite mis-used expression of this type is the term "quantum leap." A "quantum" is the smallest amount of energy you can have, and a quantum leap is the smallest possible change in an electron's energy. So a quantum leap means an incredibly small change (although a discontinuous change, which is where the word "leap" comes in). But somehow in ordinary conversation it started to mean a huge change - exactly the opposite of the original meaning. So if someone says we will make a quantum leap next year, they'll likely be right according to at least one of the definitions!

Ah yes the ol’ re-double trick. Right up there with 110 percent.

Interesting phrase: re-double our efforts.
It literally means to double one's efforts, but to do it again.
So if you are exerting 20%, then you tried exerting 40%, and now for some reason you are going to try exerting 40% again.

I would guess it means we aren’t likely to be undefeated next year but there is hope that we will see significant improvement in win-loss numbers. Perhaps success next year is a bowl game?

The problems that kept us at 3 and 4 wins the last two years are still there. In addition, our DC will need to install a new system, teaching his coaches and players. New offense, with new receivers and maybe a new QB.

Lots of work to do. It’s a big lift, but it seems like we have a good staff on the task.

That depends. We had plenty of effort the last few years with poor results.

The problem was that we were running through brick walls and going to battle instead of redoubling our efforts and giving 111 percent. Translated: We did a lot of things, but not much coaching or playing football.
