Samford, coached by former Kentucky standout Scott Padgett, is 7-3 on the season heading into a home game against South Alabama on Friday night (Lost, 72-70).

The Bulldogs, who are off to their best start since the 2001-02 season, have been tested as two of the losses are at Texas and against Louisville.

Typical Rotation Depth: 9-10 players
Offensive Style: Hack attack
Defensive Style: Pressure, Zone

Player to watch: Darius Jones-Gibson

The 6-1 Senior draws fouls at an elite Div 1 rate as over half of his shot attempts are in the paint and he's been to the line 80 times already (Shields leads the Huskers with 50 FT attempts) DJG is turnover prone and is a poor 3pt shooter

Player to watch: Matt Rose

Samford overall is a poor 3pt shooting team but Kentucky native Matt Rose and his 47.6% 3pt shooting is almost singlehandedly keeping them from being one of the worst.

The Skinny

From 1997-2012 Jimmy Tillette ran the Princeton offense at Samford, leading them to their only two tourney appearances in 1999 and 2000. Long time Tom Crean protege Bennie Seltzer took over in 2012 and was run out of town 2 years later after he had an astounding 14 players transfer on him. Current 2nd year coach and former Kentucky Wildcat player Scott Padgett has seen some success with his press and zone defense but has yet to beat anyone of note. If the Huskers show up, it won't happen tonight.

This is a slightly dangerous matchup for Nebraska as the Bulldogs excel in turning teams over and drawing fouls which have been ongoing issues for the Huskers. Jake Hammond and Ed Morrow in particular will have to keep their hacking to a minimum or else will find themselves riding the bench again. On the flipside Samford is not a good shooting team and also draws a lot of fouls in their attempts to steal. There should be some opportunity on the offensive boards as well against this team.

Look for Nebraska to have their full focus on Samford and beat the spread

Prediction: Nebraska 79 - Samford 64 with a 79% chance of Runzas

Watson should be starting...if not tomorrow...soon.

I don't know, if he's playing well off the bench, maybe don't fix what isn't broke. There are five players which average more than 20 minutes a game, and he's one of them.

He's definitely playing well, and it's fun to watch him develop.

He takes care of the ball better than Parker and isn't really that much of a downgrade defensively. He is also a much bigger threat offensively. Mostly, he is the future. I say start him now and don't look back.

Watson will probably start around the time conference play begins. I like Benny coming off the bench to spark the Defense!

Parker would be alright if we had more offensive threats on the floor with him. But he is on floor at critical times when we need a bucket and he is too much an offensive liability. I agree he can be an effective situational player off the bench but Watson has far more upside and needs to be on the floor more

We had better not sleep on Samford, they are more than capable of turning this into a game. We'll need to take charge early and not let up defensively.

As far as Watson goes, I agree with Redo. If Miles wants to keep Benny as a token starter, fine. Watson needs 30 minutes a game though, not 20. I'm sure it's a leadership thing, this is Shavon and Benny's team. Shavon may take the more vocal role, but everything I'm told, this is Benny's team, too.

The matchup I want to see is inside. They have a Freshman 6-9 center. I'm hoping Jacobson can have another solid game and maybe we can get Morrow and Hammond going again.

That said, I would love to see McVeigh regain some confidence as we finish our tune-ups for the Big 10 Season.
