Documentaries worth watching

From FLAS's list -- bold are ones I've seen and enjoyed. I'll have to look sometime to see what else I can add, as I know I have more -- and I love documentaries.

Netflix:

Athlete A

The Keepers

How to Fix a Drug Scandal

The Last Dance

High Score

Wild Wild Country

Murder Mountain

Bikram

Icarus

The Dirt

The Mind,of Aaron Hernandez

GLOW

Voyeur

The Miami Showband Massacre

Studio 54

Ted Bundy Tapes

Legend of Cocaine Island

Jim & Andy The Great Beyond

-----------------------------

The only recommendation I have (or have ever given) is not a documentary. But it's up there with the best series I've ever seen on Netflix. Babylon Berlin. It's the only series I've gone back immediately to watch a second time, as there's so much to take in. Season 4 comes out this year!

Oh, I do have one documentary to add: The Staircase

I’m interested in hearing about documentaries others have watched that are really interesting.

I like rock docs, true crime/serial killers, older pop culture/tech, etc. series based on real life stories are good too (E.g. Dopesick, Narcos), but want to see what other obscure docs might be interesting,

I’ll throw out a few and see what everyone else comes up with

The Wrecking Crew…the actual hitmaker musicians of all those hits in the 60’s and 70’s. Follow up is the Glen Campbell doc, I’ll be me.

Sound City…the LA studio and Neve console (now owned by Dave Grohl) that bore witness to hundreds of the greatest rock albums of the 70’s and 80’s

The Donut King (Hulu)

The Last Blockbuster

I’ll be Gone in the Dark (Golden State Killer) HBO max

Casette: A documentary mixtape (Peacock)

Adjust Your Tracking (VHS) Peacock

All Things must Pass (Tower Records) Peacock

Andre the Giant (HBO)

The Battered Bastards of Baseball

The Comedy Store

Chicago: The Terry Kath Experience (Peacock)

Fyre Fraud (Hulu) and Netflix)

Square Grouper

Summer of Soul (Hulu)

Wild Crime (hulu)

Knuckleball (Hulu)

Once Were Brothers: Robbie Robertson and the Band (Hulu)

Love, Gilda (hulu)

Three Identical Strangers (hulu)

the polka king

I’ll stop there before I go through Amazon Prime for more

I saw 'I'll be gone int he dark'.

Good show.

2021 was a great year for music docs.

Summer of Love by Questlove is pure joy. Music and interviews that capture the place and time.

The Velvet Underground— a very different but interesting tale of music in the 60’s.

Get Back — only if you think the Beatles matter, but if you do . . . .

I watched a couple of episodes of Get Back. For me it got repetitive. It was just the some thing over and over again.

I put GLOW on the list. Thats a really good show starring Marc Maron and Allison Brie that unfortunately didnt get another season during pandemic.

There is an actual documentary about the gorgeous ladies of wrestling but that name escapes me.

Crumb is a documentary about Robert Crumb. A cartoonist that rose to fame in the underground hippie comic scene. It is really well done. It is extremely dark at every level of analysis. Highly recommend.

I've seen some of these. Tower Records was really good, I've seen that several times.
Andre the Giant will have anyone crying. So so sad.
Fyre Fraud(s) are interesting
The Keepers will change you. Be aware of that when you watch it. One of the most disturbing things to see.
GLOW with Marc Maron is good, but that's the fictional version. I think the actual doc is also called GLOW.
Ted Bundy tapes (if I'm thinking of the right one) were tough to sit through.

There are some others to add to the list too:
Atari: Game Over
The Commodore Story (over story is good, but the founder's kid mugs for the camera and makes it more about the Holocaust than needed).
Hearts of Darkness (the making of Apocalypse Now)
Citizen 4
The Interrupters
Paradise Lost
Paradise Lost 2: Revelations
Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory
West of Memphis
The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez (also like The Keepers, you won't be the same after seeing this one)
