Don't think it was a fan support thing as much as the travel disparity. And in some cases (Miami) literally playing them on their home field.

It never helped either. People bitch about that 7 game bowl losing streak. I’ve always said, Nebraska was playing the best teams in the country, often on the road. Several of those schools won the NC by beating the Huskers. I think the lowest final rank by any of those teams was #3. NU wasn’t playing chopped liver in those games. Few schools, if any, would have fared any better in that situation.
