Big Ten Wrestling

165: #8 Wilson does not come out, Medical forfeit to #11 Ferrante (NW). Wilson finishes 6th.

174: #3 Labriola wins on medical forfeit by #4 Kemmerer (Iowa). Labriola finishes 5th.

184: #4 Venz beats #8 Cochran (MD), 6-3. Finishes 5th.

Schultz going for a title at 197 on BTN next.

Final Placings:

125: #13 Reno (no place)
133: #10 Serrano 12th
141: #4 Red (no place)
149: #3 Lovett: 4th
157: #5 Robb: 5th
165: #8 Wilson: 6th
174: #3 Labriola: 5th
185: #4 Venz: 5th
197: #1 Schultz: 2nd
285: #6 Lance: 7th

Wrestling with presumably a home crowd, only Wilson finished higher than his seed. That has to be a collective disappointment.

We'll send 7 to the national tournament, Red maybe could get an at-large bid.

Final Standings. Michigan's #2 seeded wrestler (Amine) at 184 beat Penn State's top-seeded two-time defending champion Brooks in Sudden Victory. PSU then needed a pin at heavyweight to get two bonus points and win the team championship; but, only got the 5-3 decision.

For comparison, here were the team national team rankings coming into the Big Ten tournament. Northwestern was the biggest positive surprise.

So many medical forfeits. I guess people are exhausted and saving themselves for Nationals?

Save the wear and tear. National tourney gets seeded anyhow. These lower placing matches wouldn't affect those seedings so can't blame the kids.

Anyone know what happened to Iowa's Hvywht?
There's a trend of these forfeits in the wrestlebacks this year as the athletes lock up their spots for nationals and opt to rest ahead of the upcoming tournament. But the NCAA definitely has an emerging problem of wrestlers medical forfeiting matches to preserve their records and seeds.

I personally feel that is a shame, but it's not me wrestling so I guess whatever floats their boats.
