25 Years Ago Tonight

Dang, 25 yrs?..... I was in chadron at the time teaching. Broke my hand that night hitting the ceiling when Schlesinger scored then later when Terry got the sack to seal it. A bunch of us did some snow angels in our underwear that night. Were you at the funk house that night @RedRum ?
I went to CSC for my 1st 2 years of college in 96 and 97. I remember the Funk House quite well ;)

It happened in ol' Ninety-Five
When many were hardly alive
The Huskers prevailed
The title was nailed
The goal for which we'll always strive.

For Tom it was long overdue
The coach that was mister NU
He got them prepared
They surely weren't scared
The plan they devised did come true.

At first it did not look that good
The 'Canes felt they did what they could
But strength came in play
We had our own way
At last it turned out as it should.

I'll always remember that night
The game was surely a fight
But Huskers emerged
Miami submerged
The program was never so bright!
One of the best limericks ever.

Just wow. I’m still stunned that 25 years has past. Seems like half that. Bleepin crazy. Living in OKC, it was unbelievable heaven. When I wear Nebraska gear around here anymore, I get the same thing. What happened to you guys? You should have never left the Big 12. You’ll never get back to half that. All I know is, obviously, Osborne is one of the 2-3 best coaches to ever live.

1/1/95.

Nebraska 24 Miami 17

Osborne's first national title!

For many years, I called that day the greatest day of my life. Might still be. I don't have a wife or kids to tell me otherwise. :) I would have been 25 years of age at the time. 25 years ago, I was 25 -- there you have it!

I moved from Lincoln to Minneapolis in '93. I drove down to Lincoln to watch the 95 Orange Bowl with about two dozen of my Nebraska fans at a house party. We went absolutely nuts! Dog pile in the middle of the living room. Somehow, I ended up on the bottom and had the wind knocked out of me. Hah! Loved it. A bunch of us got into a couple of cars and drove downtown. O Street was complete madness. Thousands of Husker fans in the street celebrating. Fireworks, cheers .... I hugged more people that night than the rest of my life combined. Every bar was packed. We went into one bar where they had a stage with instruments on it. Me and a few of my friends got up there and started performing to the packed house. Not that we were any good -- didn't matter. That night was perfect.

You’re 50? I wouldn’t have thought that.

I don’t remember where I was watching the game; it had to be at home. I remember the ‘94 OB the year before, because I was consoling my now 33 year old son over the loss.

What I remember most was (now Texas Lt Gov) Dan Patrick’s effusive praise for Corey Schlesinger on the radio the next day, and as much for his humble actions & reactions. Patrick was going on and on that the Oilers should draft him... So a caller to the show tells Patrick he’s racially biased and said Corey wouldn’t play a down in the NFL.

You mean Dannie Scott Goeb

Thanks for the reminder! Had just moved to Michigan. Watched alone in my basement. Jumped up on one of the Schlesinger td's and broke a light bulb. Have watched re-runs (with other Husker fans as well) about a dozen times. Every time I watch a game on NBC and Chris Collinsworth is announcing, I am reminded of this game :)

Immense satisfaction...pride...joy for Tom...and the defeat couldn't have happened to a more deserving team! We out-conditioned them. Kept our composure (just like TO said to do) Love that fullback trap play!

Among the many other "highlights" -- I remember seeing Zach Wiegert telling guys on the sideline to back up after a great defensive play so that they wouldn't get a penalty. Such exuberance :)

Costas was taken by such surprise...when Cory scored the 2nd of this td's, Bob starting saying something like "Sieve..."

We had such (we :) a mix of in-state and out-of-state talent; a dominant offensive line. The drama of which qb. The redemption of the loss in '93 (not to Miami, but to a Florida team in the bowl game). On and on...I could gush, as could you...

I hope this thread keeps going...
I wish I would have enjoyed that game more but being in Pennsylvania there wasn’t anyone to really understand how excited I was.

What's sad is that a girl who was 9 at the time is now a senior writer for ESPN.

9 + 25 = 34.

I was only 10 when that game was played. I was actually born just days after TO famously went for 2 against Miami. I like to think that ballsy call somehow fated me to be a Husker fan since my family was from Missouri and we didn't move to Omaha until '86 when I was two.

You little punk! J/K.
Just hard to accept that I've aged 25 years since then (I was 30).

Anyway, glad you came over to the good side.

I had to work that night. I was dealing Blackjack in one of the Mississippi casinos; so I couldn't watch much of the game. A dealer friend, who was working that night, was also from Nebraska. Between sets on the table we did our best to catch parts of the game in the dealer's lounge, and it always seemed that Miami was ahead. We didn't know NU had won until after the game was over because we were on the tables during the entire fourth quarter. When we discovered that NU had won, we barely had time to celebrate because we had to get back to work. Many mornings after our shift had ended we would go grab a drink at one of the other casinos but this morning it was 4 am and we were tired. We just went home and crashed. Didn't get to see the whole game until three weeks later.
