Texas QB Casey Thompson Enters Transfer Portal; Update On Campus Visiting

Sometimes when things are stagnant, it you are trying to get over the hump, small changes could make a big difference. Thompson and AM might be similar, Thompson may be a better thrower and AM a better runner. That doesn't mean they will have the same results, but it doesn't mean they will have different results either.

I guess then, to answer your question, is that people knew what we were getting with AM, but there is hope Thompson could get us over the hump.
This is true, but there's a lot of hype for a 60 something OC with a lot of mixed results as a coach. His big success story has one phenomenal year to point to and three average years before that.

I was kind of wondering the same until I watched his highlights. I'm no expert but his movement in and out of the pocket looks nothing like AM to me. He seemed to always be a half step or half second away from getting his feet set and firing the ball. Under pressure, he appears to have the ability to keep the rush in his peripheral vision and keep his eyes downfield. I hope my amateur eyes aren't deceiving me.
Good stuff in these last couple statements. Last years team, like all teams, was comprised of elements, each with its own abilities and detriments. A coach assembles the parts knowing individual limitations, but without knowing how benefit and downside will fit with other pieces.
AM may well have flourished behind a more stable line, but his tendency to hold the ball too long was a bad mix with below average time to throw. The same can be seen within any one element such as the O line. The mesh of parts can be more art than science, but one scientific certainty holds: new parts, even if they appear similar, will create a different mesh.
We will have new parts, in both chess piece and deployer. One cannot guarantee a better result, but should feel certain that the result will be different. In most settings, a coach nets improvements via small changes rather than mashing down on a Staples EZ button.

I have no doubt you are correct. But he was 4-6 last year as a starter with recruiting classes in top 10 surrounding him. What makes him different than what we have had the last 4 year? Asking for a friend.
I would submit that C.T. played very well in the biggest game of the year for Texas. Just like you and I do not blame 2AM for a lot of things, a QB who throws for almost 400 yards and 5 TD passes should have been on the winning side of the scoreboard against OU. But when your defense gives up almost 700 yards and 55 points that is a problem.
Maybe Chins can cobble together another better than average defense next year and with C.T. at the helm we beat OU this time. It could happen.
I am a 2AM fan, but maybe we beat more teams in 2022 because this guy makes those 2-3 plays a game WE didn't make last year. That's my hope if he comes on board.
It's hard to say this, but my two favorite teams next year will be NU and KSU. I hope this works out well for both kids if C.T. comes to Lincoln.

Casey Thompson is going into his fifth year of college football and is already 23 years old.
He is only coming to NU for a one year tutelage under Whipple. There is no way he continues playing college football in 2023 at the age of 24.
Therefore, this notion that landing Thompson will somehow scare away Purdy is nonsense and it would be absolutely fantastic for NU to land both....which certainly appears to be the way its headed.

Really hope he is N. I like Thompson’s mobility and pocket presence. I think that is a must for us to be successful. (Like that Purdy has this as well)

His 24 TDS to 9 interception ratio and low fumble numbers, if repeated l, might get us over the top. Without injury would he have been even better?

Offensively we were actually decent last year, second in BIG total offense and fourth in scoring. What is mostly needed to improve scoring is 1) reduce critical turnovers 2) red zone scoring (somewhat kicking problems related but also needing better run game) and 3) some play calling and maybe some fairness on calls

I think Thompson helps with 1). Many of our touchdowns were Martinez runs so I don’t want to lose that aspect and Thompson can show that element. I think we have addressed kicking woes on 2). Will Ervin/Johnson/Yant another year and another year for OLine (hate losing Jurgens), plus transfers help the red zone run game? Hope so. On 3) we have a new OC and hoping him with Frost can improve effectiveness of play calling in red zone. Now for the fairness of calls. Let’s pray.

Finally, hoping defense doesn’t take too much of a step back. I thinking 2nd and 3rd levels will be good and hoping for DLine. Would like to see an edge rusher or another big nose tackle.

Agree. And as I read your post, it occurred to me - didn't Whipple have to assure Purdy that Whip would be at Nebraska long enough to see thru Purdy's developmental process? I'm wondering what the nature of that conversation was like. Or maybe it was just "they need us here - let's be the heros and turn this thing around."
Maybe it's understood that Whipple will still be here whether Scott Frost is or isn't. I don't see Whipple, Joseph, and Raiola here just for one year

Come on staff, Close this Thompson deal already. The longer this drags the more I worry.

By the way this Thompson kid can play, watch home his film

Its a wonder he had enough TOP to throw 5 TD's.

What's the timeline for CT & BP to commit? Gotta be before the 14th, right?

An experienced and successful OC who is currently at the top of his game. It does matter that his best season was this most recent one, and not 5 or 10 years ago. What attainable OC candidate had a better resume than that, for the current situation?

If Thompson and Purdy transfer as indications point to, Whipple will deserve a share of credit for helping to recruit two talented prospects immediately into the QB room. Similar to my last question, what attainable talent should we look to instead? I’d call that a tangible good result, to support the’hype’.

I also don’t understand the discussion about expecting Thompson to have the results of AM. The one way the Huskers could guarantee to get the same results as AM would have been to keep him as the starter next year. He’s already contributed to the firing of his position coach, OC and truncated salary of his head coach. So they go out and (imminently) attract a talented QB or two, in addition to Torres’ signing. What more could we hope for or expect? Thompson has the physical tools, has played in big time games. What better options do the Huskers have than to bring in a guy with that resume? (He still has to win the starting job.)

Several posters keep reminding us that Frost is handicapped by a tentative situation where players may not be sure he’ll have the job long. In that context Whipple and Thompson seem like triumphant catches. Personally, I think its not that ridiculous for a recruit to look at this past season and feel like this is a team poised to turn the corner, with the stability that entails. These recruits aren’t delusional to think that. A team that ‘should have’ beaten Michigan, MSU and Iowa just limiting my list to the more aggravatingly inept give-aways. Imagine what the expectations would be if you kept the bad loss to Illinois, but closed out those 3 games.

FTT... I think this is a short sighted take. Whipple's biggest attribute is coaching up QBs. When the playing field was level...Whipple produced very good offenses and excellent QB play.

Have a look at his record... When he was at New Haven, Brown and UMass (when UMass was FCS) they produced tons of scoring... His second stint at UMass only looks bad because they were so out-talented vs their opponents. They were a new FBS Indy and played a ton of schools much better than they could ever hope to be. You only need to look at how bad UMass football is now to see that 4-8 was not actually that bad... case in point... in the 2017 season they went to Knoxville and lost to the Vols by 4 and went to Starkville and lost to Miss St by 1... UMass has no business being on the same field with SEC talent.
