Brett Bielema at Illinois

Illinois "should" be one of the best teams in the B1G. They have the best population base from which to recruit.

I have lived in Chicagoland for 25+ years. Illinois has decent, but not great HS football. Chicagoland is more a hotbed for basketball recruiting but there is still good HS football talent to be found. In addition, the UofI administration is largely ambivalent towards college athletics. Nearby universities such as Wisconsin, Michigan, Notre Dame and even Northwestern understand great academics can co-exist with a championship-level football program. Those schools prioritize recruiting Illinois, as does Iowa. Under the previous regime (Lovie Smith & Company), the coaching staff really didn't make an effort to develop relationships with in-state football programs and it showed. Say what you want about Bielema, but he'll have far more success keeping talent in-state than his recent predecessors. Yeah, it's a low bar...

Just watched the Big ten do their preseason story on Illinois. They have ten returning-four year letter winners. Nine all conference ballot guys returning. He has a veteran offensive line with NFL potential.
You had to really listed to what they said. 9 had all vonference mentions. That means at least 1 person voted for them. Matorbhebhe and brown were the killers. 1 of those is gone.

Also except for a few runs luke was terrible.

Love didn't hit the suburbs and catholic leagues around Chicago nearly hard enough in recruiting. NW and ND pull a lot of talent out of those schools. Bielema will likely take that part of the state more seriously
