Palmer and Copeland put names in NBA draft, will not hire agent so coming back still an option

Roby onviously has a long way to go to be an NBA player. Not saying he won't but you better be good in all aspects or great at one to stick in the NBA.

He obviously made great strides this year. He needs to play a season as one of the go-to players on the squad and see how that pans out. He's got the body and athleticism...

Shawn Marion is an excellent analogy. I would also say a much more athletic Draymond Green. Green's sophomore year he put up 9.9 points, 7.7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1.2 steals. Roby's sophomore line was 8.6 points, 6.2 rebounds, 1.7 assists, .6 steals, and 2 blocks a game. There are some differences to their games, but they are both extremely versatile post pieces who see the floor like a point guard. Miles' motion offense isn't a high-assist offense, Roby would have a ton of assists in a pass/cut oriented system.

If I'm Miles, I'm in Roby's head that he's the man next year. It doesn't matter if Palmer, Copeland, and Watson are all back, he's the alpha and defers to no-one. I think it's just 100% a confidence thing with Roby, Miles has to coach him out of his shell and Roby has to realize that it's a weakness.

Hrm... maybe we have different definitions? Does he have NBA skill? No. Is he an amazing athlete? Yes. Is he a better athlete than some in the NBA? Yes. Will he be in the NBA? Not unless he gets a lot better. Does he have the potential to develop into an NBA player? Yes. Is he an NBA Talent? Not yet.

I didn't attend two home games this year... but I caught them on video later. Roby is my favorite player on the team, and my family cheers for him as well even though they don't like "sportsball".
I think you might be forgetting the NBA is a specialist league. Guys have functions who make rosters, and scoring is limited to 2 or 3 players at most. That means all you need to do is something else very good. It can be rebounding, distribution of the ball, or defense. But a guy like Roby brings another piece to the puzzle in that he can defend multiple positions. Having one player who can guard a 2 to a 5, if only for short windows, is roster gold. Roby is on the cusp of that kind of ability.

I sure hope so. I think he's the type of guy who can play Center or Point Guard. I just don't think he's there yet.

I got to go to the Suns practice facility when I lived in Phoenix. On the wall the had what amounted to a tape measure for guys to measure wingspan. There was a silhouette of Marion on it, showing his height of 6’7”, and his arms that reached right at 7’. I was 6’8” at the time, and I’ve always been just a shade over 6’9” on my reach. That’s a 5 inch swing on Marion’s reach from what people usually are.

Guys with long arms like Marion, and like Roby just mess with your game, and that makes you adjust nearly everything; how you protect the ball dribbling, how you pass, how you rebound, the way you shoot, even where you shoot from. It’s just a pain! And someone like Roby who jumps so quick can humble you in a very public manner. When he sends your shot back at you, in a motion that looks like Lauren Stivrins spiking from a slide attack, you kind of decide to pass the ball the rest of the game.

If Roby played 5-10 years ago, he’d own the defensive end, and rarely be in foul trouble. The way they officiate, bailing out the offense and allowing them to initiate contact hurts a guy like Roby. Guys know he’s going to get their shot, so they just throw themselves into him, which puts him on the bench too much.
Thanks for sharing that...really good stuff. I didn't know you were so short. ;)

Again, I agree with your points about Roby. Nebraska is such a better team with him on the floor. Very frustrating watching the opponents do that so that he spent more time on the bench.

I keep imagining next season with him playing confidently next to to Palmer, Copeland, and Watson...obviously, they all have to get the right info that makes them come back.

And I don’t mean to come across negative, but I see Watson as the weak link in that group if he’s expected to play a pure point guard. He seems more of a 2 on this team with the talent we have.

Perhaps, Thomas Allen and/or Xavier Johnson will pick up the role of the 1 while Watson can play the 2 more. Watson definitely didn't have the consistent season that he had hoped for.

When he has to think about distributing the ball to others, it hurts his offense, and honestly, I don’t think he has great court vision. He doesn’t seem to anticipate where his teammates will be and getting them the ball for open looks. This type of free flowing motion offense works best with a really solid, classic point guard. Not that he shouldn’t score, but scoring, driving, positioning the ball on the court, all of that is to create more opportunities in the offense for everyone. Good point guards think that way, but I don’t see Watson as that kind of guard.

Having that classic point guard would go a long way in making the free flowing motion offense look much more like a free flowing offense.

Free flowing motion offense and "nebraska basketball" probablybdont belong in the same sentence

The thing I hate about it is it does little to actually use one player to help create space for another...at least the way we run it. Guys do that ‘matador screen’, which does little or nothing. That’s something that needs to really be taught right, or you create no separation or get called for a moving screen. If you have the latter, and some officiating crews have a passion for that call, you have to have your guys come to a set and delay their roll or break. Instead, we tend to just move further away from the man we should screen and make the motion useless.

Yes, Watson is really a scoring guard despite his troubles this year. He struggled when he just facilitated. He was really the 4th option this year and that hurt his game.

Maybe I’m missing something, but I’m pushing a huge stack of chips and going all-in in Xavier Johnson. I don’t know how he’s a 3 Star or didn’t get offers from the more elite programs. I’m not a scout, but when I watch his film, it really stands up. Elite athlete for sure, very disruptive on defense. Plus, he’s going against high-major competition. Not getting defense won’t be an issue. He’s going to play immediately. Like All-N said (and I’ve said before), Glynn very well may slide over for him.

A 6'0" (wishful thinking?) 2 guard? Meh. Reality is if he loses the PG spot it probably won't be until big 10 play at the soonest. At that point the rest of the rotation should be pretty well set. He'd be a solid back up PG at that point.

We will have to play a small guard lineup at times next year unless something changes. I fully expect Watson, Allen, and Johnson to be in the rotation. One of them is going to have to play off the ball a significant amount of time.
