I think the stuff with Mattison is probably being overblown. It's an undeniable fact that Michigan is right up there with Virginia, Texas, and the big three California state schools as the most prestigious and exclusive state universities in the country. I don't know what he got on the ACT, but the fact is he would have zero chance of getting into Michigan with a 3.1 GPA without football.

My guess is that Mattison was just trying to say that football has opened doors for this young man that wouldn't otherwise be open. Which is absolutely true. Maybe what Mattison said came out the wrong way. But he's a highly experienced recruiter who has been in thousands of living rooms just like Neal's, and he is a holdover from Hoke's staff, so it's not like he's working on a new sales pitch.

I'm really glad that Daishon is going to Nebraska, but given all the drama that has attended his recruiting process, I'm having a little trouble buying that a guy like Greg Mattison marched into his living room and said something that was all that offensive.

I just know that usually we are no better or no worse than most fan bases and best not for us to look at things with rose colored glasses. Best to admit our own faults and success.

But our coaching staff is, apparently, once again.

Understand, but he and his dad with pretty articulate and blunt in their statements about what was said....including asking him to leave the home....you may be right....but they pulled no punches what so ever....

Very good points.

I love it when academics start to be brought into a football (or really any big time college sports) discussion. How many football players at ANY big time school would have qualified for that school on academics alone? Obviously it varies based on the academic admission requirements for every school...but I would venture a guess to say that, on average, it would be less than 50%...and FAR less than 50% at schools like Miami, Stanford, Cal, etc.

Any Michigan fan thinking that it is different at THEIR school is smoking crack. Their own President acknowledged this very recently:

https://www.insidehighered.com/news...me-sports-greater-risk-compromising-academics

Speaking to the University of Michigan faculty senate last week, Mark Schlissel, the university’s president, was candid in his assessment of the admissions process for athletes. "We admit students who aren't as qualified," he said. “And it's probably the kids that we admit that can't honestly, even with lots of help, do the amount of work and the quality of work it takes to make progression from year to year.â€￾

“These past two years have gotten better, but before that, the graduation rates were terrible, with football somewhere in the 50s and 60s when our total six-year rate at the University is somewhere near 90 percent, so that’s a challenge.â€￾

Recruiting is a nasty business and some of the tactics used by various coaching staffs are interesting to say the least....

Bottom line is he is a Husker in a position of need....and this the good news....:)

Don't know a thing about Mattison, but tend to agree with your analysis. Michigan is one of the best schools in the country, no question. However, there is a "Michigan attitude" that just rubs people the wrong way when it comes out. Call it elitist, superior...whatever, but it's just NOT attractive to many. The messenger is probably clueless about how the message was perceived because he's surrounded by like minded people. In this case, there were much better ways (and tones) to sell the excellent education he'd receive and the opportunities that education might offer.

Having lived and worked in the Chicago area for 18 years, I became all too familiar with the Michigan man. They're the one school I love to hate. So I would have loved to pile on. But when I just thought about, I just couldn't imagine a guy who is as experienced as Greg Mattison coming into a kid's living room and saying something that was patently offensive.

Then again, he has spent alot of time coaching at Notre Dame and Michigan, so it definitely is possible.

Sounds like he has the grades to me.....would get him into the U of Cal system where I went too and not to be arrogant but a better school/system than Michigan....

DJ@DaishonNeal90
Now some Michigan fans saying I don't have grades

I get a kick out of schools who talk about their academic standards and play games with it when it comes to their football programs. If you're going to restrict admissions based on academics and boast about it, apply it to your athletic programs while you're at it.
