  • Interview with Kenric Young

    Kenric Young of Gainesville High is one of the better wide receiver prospects in Northern Florida for the 2014 class. Young, who already has numerous offers from schools in the Big Ten, ACC, Big 12, Pac 12 and Big East conferences, is currently one of the top targets for the Huskers' upcoming class at the position. With an estimated 18-20 available spots in their 2014 class, Nebraska may look to take 2 or 3 wide receivers. Tim Beck, who is personally recruiting Young, is hoping Kenric fills one of those slots. I had the opportunity to interview Kenric in an attempt to gain some insight into his recruiting experience. The following is a transcript from that:

    Q: What kind of things do you do for fun?

    A: I just like to hang out with my team and play video games.

    Q: At what age did you start playing football?

    A: I started playing football when I was 8 years old.

    Q: What was your favorite college team growing up?

    A: My favorite team was Miami but now it's LSU.

    Q: Have a favorite NFL Team?

    A: The New England Patriots and Houston Texans.

    Q: Which is better, the NFL or college?

    A: I think college football is better.

    Q: Do you try and emulate any specific player?

    A: Andre Johnson

    Q: Any particular reason for the jersey number?

    A: No, I just like the number 17.

    Q: Are you happy the NCAA is going to a playoff, or did you prefer the BCS system?

    A: It really doesn't matter to me, I just want to be a leader for whatever team I go to.

    Q: Who was your first scholarship offer?

    A: My first offer came from the Utah Utes.

    Q: How many scholarship offers do you currently have?

    A:I have 21 offers at the moment.

    Q: Is there a school that hasn't offered you that you would like to see do so?

    A:I would like to get offers from South Carolina and North Carolina.

    Q: What are some of the considerations you have when deciding between schools?

    A: I am looking at the schools academics, their coaching staff and my mothers opinion is a factor too.

    Q: Who are the schools currently on your list for consideration? Any leader(s)?

    A: Nebraska, NC State, Ohio, Georgia Tech, Western Kentucky, Kansas, Central Florida and Western Michigan.

    Q: Who is currently recruiting you the hardest?

    A: Basically all of the schools I named as my leaders.

    Q: Do you pay attention to the recruiting momentum of the teams you are considering?

    A: Yes I do.

    Q: Did you attend any schools Spring Game?

    A: I went to the Florida Gators spring game.

    Q: Do you plan on attending any camps or combines this summer?

    A: Yes I do. I am still thinking of who and where.

    Q: Have you thought about who you might want to use your official visits on?

    A: No, not yet.

    Q: What positions are you being recruited to play?

    A: Wide receiver

    Q: What do you feel are some of your playing strengths?

    A: I feel like I am a physical receiver. I go get the ball at its highest point and I can stretch the field with my speed.

    Q: What are some things you would like to work on between now and college?

    A: I want to work on getting off jams better and perfecting my route running.

    Q: How would you feel about redshirting?

    A: If the coaches feel it is necessary then I am okay with it.

    Q: What is the most annoying aspect of the recruiting process?

    A:The reporters from recruiting websites can be at times.

    Q: Do you have a major in mind?

    A: Sports Administration

    Q: What are your goals for your senior season?

    A: To lead my team to state.

    Q: Do you have any individual goals for your college career?

    A: To become an All-American and to win the Biletnikoff Awardas the nation's best wide receiver.

    Q: What will you miss the most about high school?

    A: I think I will just miss playing with my friends and playing in front of my hometown.

    Q: What is the craziest recruiting pitch you have heard so far?

    A: I can't remember what they said exactly.

    Q: Do you have a time frame as to when you would like to commit?

    A: No, not yet I don't.

    Q: In addition to National Letter of Intent Day in February, should there be an early signing period like college basketball has?

    A: I don't think so, no.

    Q: Have you communicated with any prospective recruits about attending the same school?

    A: Yes, Allen Lazard who is an Iowa State commit.

    Q: What are 3 things on your Bucket List?

    A: (joking) My gloves, sweat suit and cleats.

    Q: Who has been the biggest influence in your life?

    A: My mother.
