Worst loss, But…

A lot to digest tonight. First things first- this loss officially enters the discussion for worst loss of our 23 year purgatory. There are many contenders, all different kinds of losses. But have we ever lost a game when we doubled up the other team in yardage, and had four times as many first downs? I’ll have to scour the Huskermax archives to find out.
Plenty of blame to go around. Defense played well except for one play. Bad snap on the field goal attempt likely cost us three points. The muffed punt was almost surreal and had more than a few of us wondering if curses are real(they’re not). Turnover at the end was obviously a killer. I know we’re sick of losing, BUT— there’s a lot to like. We pretty much had our way with Iowa on the road in harsh conditions. The offense under Holgorsen looks completely different. Excited to see what they look like after four more weeks under his direction. He must be retained, whatever it takes. Better days ahead. GBR!

Honestly, I think it's for the best that so many major contributors are graduating. There are way too many non-performers in big games dating back to guys from the Frost era and guys who recently transferred in. This team needs a mental and cultural overhaul. Virtually every major mistake tonight was made by a senior or super senior.

Just because a guy has been starting for five years on the O-line doesn't always mean he is very good. Both our starting tackles to start the year have a lot of starts but have not really shined, improved yes but still not BIG 10 level play after play

Or the WRs who have let so many passes sail through their open hands. We have a freshman QB already making mistakes with his head spinning at times… you could use a couple of other, older guys step up and make a play on occasion.

I hear you, and you might have a point about a losing mentality taking hold here in recent years. But some seniors made some nice plays tonight as well, including the much maligned Bryce Benhart. Yes, he got beat on the last play, but he's manned that spot for a long time and I’m sure he’s played through a lot of aches and pains. I salute the kid, and the other seniors as well

If I was a player or a coach, I would leave this dumpster fire. Our ceiling is, and will always be, 6-7, which will be our record after the bowel game. Oops, I meant bowl game. Either way it will be a s**T show of ineptitude.

That’s way off base. There are many teams out there with far fewer resources who are doing very well. I don’t know why NU is so stuck, but there aren’t inherent limitations holding us back.

Worst loss? Hmmm, that’s tough to say because there have been so many severe gut punches in recent years. I’ll say this though, it definitely is demoralizing. Right now I have very little interest in watching this .500 team play in a bottom-feeder bowl, especially when they can’t even kick a field goal or catch a punt. And I consider myself to be a diehard fan. I just hope the players aren’t as demoralized as the fans by this loss.

I mean, this is just objectively not true. We’ve won multiple national titles and conference championships as a program. Whether they’ve been recent or not doesn’t matter… our ceiling has been hit and it’s not what we’re seeing on the field right now, nor is it the expectation.

I’m very interested to see what Holgorsen can do with this offense, given four more weeks of practice. And hopefully we get an announcement that he’s coming back next year

I disagree. And I shudder to think what this season would have been like without guys like Ty and Nash. The most critical errors tonight were made by youngsters.

It was a mental loss which is really bothersome. The only silver lining is that Iowa is as good as they are ever going to be with an old coach. Nebraska has a much higher ceiling if they do the right things going forward.
We are as consistent as Iowa if you think about it. To the point of being predictable. I am not sure about a higher ceiling. 6,7,8 will be our ceiling and we just got to 6 after 7 years. Oof.
