Working toward depth

Hope MR gets the space and players to build to the depth that he wants. Won't be this year yet (thought this year should be better), but with two more good recruiting classes, we'll be getting there.

Transfer portal makes it harder to build depth; winning will help, but it will never be like the old days.

You can't build depth overnight, it will take a few classes. I really like that Rhule has basically divided the entire team into 3. It means every player is getting quality reps with and against the 1s at every practice. I have to believe this will help speed up the building depth process.

Recruiting, retention, and development will make it exactly like the old days. All three are exactly what’s happening now.

For sure that will be a headwind for every program, and we will lose some players we want to keep. But I think Rhule will be better than most at using culture to make players want to stay or join. That will be important in the new environment.

For example, this 3 team thing they're doing. That lots of benefits. You get lots if developmental reps so you feel like you are making progress. You get the exhilirating feeling of team competition even if you're young or just a backup. It makes it possible for people other than only the ones to star, if only in practice. It energizes. It builds camaraderie.

Some winners are strong enough that even when you change the rules of the game - like college football is doing now, - they'll win anyway. I'm hoping Rhule is going to be like that. I'll tell you for sure in a couple of years.

My thoughts were almost exactly the same. (I know scary right?) I think a lot of the kids lost to the portal in the past were because of two reasons.

1. They felt they were not getting enough reps because of the way practice was run.
2. Really good starters like Wandale may have felt that because there was no depth they were getting overworked and beat up.

The NSFL (Nebraska Spring Football League) Will help to resolve both of those issues. So, for example. If after the spring game HH is told he is third behind 2 freshmen. He at least knows he was given a fair shot. That is all most kids want.
