Wittingham: We need $7 million a year in NIL money to be competitive

Hmmm
Didn't read it but does this include some national businesses using players in their local markets and paying them well? Like the panini contract?
Yes. And on that topic…

99% of college athletes have no meaningful commercial value that would boost a business. It’s a bit of a farce. For my franchises, we are going to be doing an “NIL” deal for a local athlete who plays for a nearby university, but we have no expectation that our ROI is going to be commensurate with our expense.

I could pay Arch Manning $100K to make some appearances at my locations and do some media promos, and the majority of people would have no idea who he is.

NIL is third party bribery for athletic services to help the local ball team.

Panini is hitting various markets, self promotional where they expect more from their investments.

Most likely right. Though, I still remember it is SOS Heating and AC that Decoldest Crawford did a tv ad for.

So there may be some small value if the athlete is easily tied to the product.

very small. Most SOS customers will not have the slightest clue who Crawford is, nor care.

To put it in perspective, there probably aren’t even 10 players in the NFL with meaningful commercial value. Mahomes, Kelce, maybe a few others.

In terms of marketing value of players, NIL is a fraud.

What I find interesting is thats not even half the state of Utah has to come up with. Both Utah and BYU will need this same amount.

You could argue that BYU won't need as much or BYU has other support, but I can't see BYU coming in second in monies one way or another.

In a state the population size of Iowa, will it be the same or more there?
If so, seven million for Nebraska is on the cheap per person averaged out.
Minnesota even cheaper.

What its going to take in the end will be the market, and whether they cap that by averaging out per capita or however they'll do it, its going to change, we're still in the early wild wild west stages here.
If they allow too much they'll have shrunk the customer base too much, or fans. That will have its own poor returns effects.
CFB is too local, period.
