The question isn't really between a contributor and a non-contributor. It's speculation about which player can help more in specific situations. The position coaches value certain things, while Holgorsen sees it differently. It's an evaluation problem like the Green Bay Packers faced at quarterback going into the 2007 season. Should they go with the proven but diminished Favre or the unproven but high potential of Rodgers? Choices about player rotation isn't always clear cut.
I like Benning too, but sometimes he gets a little too cute with hints about his insider knowledge. As an outsider, I feel like he should either share what he knows or not discuss it all. That's a small thing though and overall I think he's a good voice to have around Nebraska.
For sure, the too cute "I know, but you don't" gets annoying. I also get sometimes why he says it. He wants to convey that what he's passing along can be taken as real because he does have some insider info.
I'm probably nit picking, but I don't like the cryptic stuff, I think there is a bit of a covering both sides of the fence on some topics that allow him to say, 'see, I told you so', even when he also says just the opposite of the result. I enjoy that he can speak to us without sounding like he's just slammed 3 Redbulls, but I do think he can take the 'stoner' delivery a little too far.
Agreed. He's in a tough spot sometimes. I absolutely want to hear the non-public discussions going on around the program, but I get that he can't share everything without burning relationships.
Yeah, the hinting can get frustrating. He couldn't really be any more direct though and keep his position, so I get that. I'm not sure he's even "supposed" to hint, but since what he does seem to be pretty on point with what he does say, I like that he does.
Like everyone, we learn most when we fail, same for coaches.

Not likely. As Holgorsen said, that 'favoritism' takes place on nearly every team, nearly every position, it's just human nature. There's nothing nefarious about it. Maybe a certain athlete works his tail off, helps build the culture, is a leader in every way, but is not the most physically gifted in the position group. That guy may play ahead of someone more talented. All humans have biases, some are more visible than others.
