Wisconsin Week Practice Thread; 21 November Coach Rhule

The Young man has had a rough streak and has Physically and Mentally been beat up but sounds like he has not given up or thrown in the towel and is willing to reach out for help and guidance from coaches and players if needed. This and his involvement in recruiting leads me to believe he will be back next year
I think Raiola knew exactly what he was getting into and, while it might be tougher than he imagined (but maybe not), I think he's on board with trying to make it work. And Holgorson is the kind of OC who can make things happen.

I really hope we didn't just bring him in for 3 games. That's a horrible decision if that's what happens. We need consistency, if Rhule wanted Sat out of the OC spot, promote Thomas to call plays then.
I'd like DH to stay too, but that may not be up to Rhule.

At 18:47 of Rhule's Nov 11 press conference he said he'd like Holgorsen to be the OC going forward (in context meaning next year)but he's not sure what's going to happen after the season because Dana wants to be a head coach again.

My guess if DH gets a good HC offer, he's gone. I don't believe that would reflect poorly on Rhule in any way. If Holgorsen does well in this short stint till year end and then takes a good HC job, Rhule still had the sense and guts to bring in such a high caliber guy mid season when he can have an impact, given the urgency, and when the vast majority of other good candidates are not available because they are currently working.

That's also a credit to Rhule's problem solving, flexibility, network, resourcefulness, and reputation.

If Holgorsen doesn't stay Rhule can just hire a new OC in cycle.

I think Holgorson needs at least another full year as an OC to get another good HC gig. You're not gonna hire him on a 3 game audition. I think this sets up well for Rhule and Holgorson. Holgorson can bring in someone he'd recommend to take over as an assistant. Then there can be a decent transition with someone who knows the system already.

Plus, DH as OC even for just 3 games likely gives us a much better chance of winning one of them then if Rhule just let MS go and had Thomas call plays. A guy of DH's caliber as full OC can do things like challenge the wideouts to block, tell the RB coach to tell his guys the holes are there, and find talent that should be on the field.

If this experiment helps, Rhule deserves a lot of credit for being able to find and execute an outside the box solution, even if it's only temporary.

Yeah, that would be ideal.

I agree, 1-2 years as an OC that’s successful and he’s getting a P-4 job. If he wants to coach in the Mac , MWC or new Pac-12 he could probably get a HC job for the ‘25 season. Heck you never know, maybe he’ll want to be a Chip Kelly and be an OC at a B1G or Sec school and collect a huge check.

Holgorsen didn't really identify any problems we didn't already know. The one thing that stands out to me is implying some of the right guys aren't playing because position coaches are playing favorites. Is there anything worse a coach can do than that?

That’s not what Holgerson meant at all. It’s not playing favorites. It’s seeing what you like in a guy and then being blinded to what other guys bring to the table.

I mean I have my opinion too. They love Dowdell at RB. I think Emmet Johnson is better. Diesel is a battering ram with very little vision IMO. I love EJ wiggle.

Why does Barrett prefer Dowdell? I don’t know, I am not at practice. Most likely he just really likes big backs.

It's kind of human nature, @Bigger Ed . I think we all tend to do it, which is why we need to have others around us who are willing to step in and say, 'dude, I know he's a good guy, but he isn't getting it done'. It happens at work, it happens in sports, it's kind of part of life. If all things are equal, I don't think there is anything wrong going with the person we like or admire more. The problem is when they aren't equal in ability and that 'like' factor swings the balance when it shouldn't be.
