Why I’m not a fan of Automatic Qualifiers

this is why I’m not a big fan of automatic. #9 Miami would automatically get the 4th seed and a first round by. To put this in context. Imagine Nebraska Volleyball being the number 2 team in the nation behind Penn state. But Creighton gets a number 4 seed and a first round by and only ranked #9 in the country.

Just relooked this model. It isn’t correct as of RIGHT NOW. Tennessee should actually be in the by model as a top 4 seed as their conference record of 5-1 is better than Texas at 4-1. Again as mentioned some of this will change but it might not. We are likely to see higher ranked teams passed over for automatic qualifiers for first round bys.

I know Notre Dame doesn't get any preference currently, I am saying I do not want any modification to the current system to give ND any sort of preference.
Yea that kind of threw me off too how you worded it. You said one of the changes you’d like to see is Notre Dame not get any preferences.

Eliminate the byes and have 16 teams. With a system that is truly conjecture who really knows where all the teams stand against one another! That is the reason “we play the game”! GBR

NO. NO. 1000 times NO. 12 teams is way more than enough. If you don't qualify for the 12-team playoff, you don't deserve to be in the conversation. We're already going to see teams that don't belong with 12.

What you, and other people who would call for more teams, are forgetting is the physical toll of a D1 football game. You're already going to see teams by the semis that are a shell of what they were in mid-season due to injuries.

I'd rather see a 6-team playoff. But then you'd get the G5 teams griping that they didn't get a fair shake. Let's let this version play out a few years and see what results.

The issue is the 4 teams with a bye get a huge advantage ... a week more of rest, a week more to prepare ... additionally its not the 4 best teams getting a bye ... its the 4 best conference winners. 2-loss Colorado arguably outside of the top 12 teams could win the B12 and earn one of those byes whereas a 1-loss tOSU or Oregon could end up playing the first round and lose.

Also your argument doesn't work because teams 5-12 are potentially playing 3 games while teams 1-4 are only playing 2 ... adding 4 more teams is literally adding 2 more games and getting rid of the significant advantage the top 4 teams have with the current system. If you were arguing that it should be 8 teams I'd accept your argument more.

That's the most glaring problem with this system.

Idk, I just think Miami is good enough to earn the bye. Like most championship teams, they've accomplished sumn that's hard to do should be rewarded. Not their fault they are in a weak conference....really a down right crappy conference lol.

Is it Ohio states fault they are in a tough conference and get skipped over by a team ranked 8 spots worse with the same record? What if it was Nebraska ranked 2nd and we got skipped over for number 9 Colorado?

I understand what you are saying, 16 teams eliminates an advantage for the top four teams! FCS uses a 24 team format!! Basketball is 64 teams? Earlier the bowls kept Division 1 from a playoff! GBR

Based off ESPN rankings automatic qualifiers.

#11. Miami. BYE
#12. Boise. BYE
#14. BYU. At large.

I saw a Bracketology this morning that had Colorado getting the final BYE as the 4-seed. Absolutely wild to think that is a possibility given what we saw when we played them.
