I woulda liked to see Larry Johnson Sr. and Ron Zook on this list both are outstanding candidates!!!!!

sometimes former HC's dont do as good of a job as an up and comer...I have know idea, but I like the thought of Ekeler's passion being a part of the staff again.

Tell me where you see hes an offensive guy! Hope that helps.

I like the choices except Ekeler and from within. Would think all the other would bring something good to the table.

Stoops has first-hand knowledge of what a dominant Husker defense looks like (2009 Holiday Bowl, anyone?). Although I'm a bit of a homer for Big Red, I have to think that our defensive legacy would be a dream job for just about any coach.

How many other teams have a nickname for their defensive starters? The Blackshirts are like a specialist group inside of an already special unit. They're like the Army Rangers or Navy Seals; a specialist unit that gets their own recognition.

I think that Bo is going to give it to JP. Nothing backing my opinion up other than my gut feeling.

Go Navy Seals beat Army Rangers.

Saw this comment under the OWH article linked on the front page. This guy brings up Ed Donatell which I think is a really interesting idea.

WIHusker says:

I think we need to be thinking about this hire creatively. The reasons why Stoops would be a great hire are well-rehearsed. What about these other options? (This is a brainstorm – I’m not going to make some wild claim about inside information, as clearly I have none.)
-Ed Donatell – Current SF 49ers DB coach. DC with the Packers (including 2001, when they went 12-4, with a strong defense) when Pelini was LBs coach. 49ers are 10-2 this year, first year under Jim Harbaugh (and Donatell’s 1st year there as well).
-Jim Heacock – Current Ohio State DC, may not be retained by Meyer. Has won Broyles national assistant coach of the year award. Ohio ties for Pelini and for recruiting. Brings great knowledge of B1G.
-Tom Bradley – Current Penn State interim coach. Ties to Paterno; did he also know about Sandusky, whom he replaced? Then again, taint could wash away quickly if a new affiliation with NU proves rehabilitating. Responsible for 5th-ranked defense in the country this year, connections to fertile recruiting ground in PA, unlikely to be retained at Penn State. Brings great knowledge of B1G.

Advantage in hiring any of these guys over Stoops: far less buzz about looking for a HC job. Thoughts?

Why would Donatell want to leave?

Heacock seems possible

Why put on any PSU stink?

Going to be Stoops but all of this discussion is fun.

Boston Herald has picked up the AP story out of Omaha (prob by Eric Olsen) on Stoops............

http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/...articleid=1386449&srvc=sports&position=recent

He declined to comment on whether Bo Pelini had discussed a job with him but added, "I talk to Bo a lot."

Stoops said he watched Nebraska three or four times on television this season and was impressed."Bo has a certain style he likes to play, and it’s very effective," Stoops said. "We saw them in a bowl game and they got after us pretty good."

Stoops was defensive coordinator at Oklahoma under his brother, Bob, before he took the Arizona job in 2004. Mike Stoops said he wouldn’t have a problem with being an assistant coach again after having spent eight seasons as a head coach."No," he said. "I love coaching defense. That’s really my passion."

The last quote....... Give that man the job. It's one thing to hire someone whom is trying to build a strong resume for a new job but it's another to hire someone who loves and has passion about the job you have them doing. I honestly don't know a whole lot about Mike because he was a DC on a team I could careless about and then HC for a team I don't care about, but from what I am reading and hearing the guy is good at what he does.
