He wasnt all that charmin
honestly i forgot he was even a oc here. hard to say since the defense was so dysfunctional. the defense collapsed every game in the 2nd quarter that year its hard to say what the other half would have looked like if it hadnt. at the end of the day, prolly just middle of the road on a bad team.
Probably about the same spot as this thread would be ranked: between a GFOA/Paramus thread and dead last.
He is absolutely positively without a doubt THE worst OC in the 21st century and given that Frank Solich and TO preceded him in the 20th century ... you have to go back until the 1960's before you find a worst OC than him.

Whipple's arrogance, his inability to judge talent, his bullheadedness, his lack of leadership ... he was the death nail for Frost. After he (Frost) did this I knew it was time for him to go. I believe if Mickey Joseph would've fired Whipple as well as Chinander after the Georgia Southern game, I believe MJ could've become the head coach.
I believe it was the Illinois game where Whipple got taken out on the sidelines and left the game. Afterwards Casey Thompson was hurt, MJ, who took over OC duties put Logan Smothers in and went to a run-centric scheme, with some success. Whipple returned, immediately benched Smothers, inserted Chubba Purdy and NU ended up losing going away. Purdy was horrible and NU didn't score in H2.

Speaking of Chubba Purdy (Gr Senior):
- He has 7 for 15 for 97 yards and 1 INT against Penn State
- He did have 14 rushes for 55 yards (3.9 average)
- He started the game and is listed as the starter on their depth chart.
- Backup AJ Bianco, a redshirt junior, came in and lead Nevada to their only TD, albeit against PSU's scrubs.

He also coached Seneca Wallace and Colt McCoy.
He was at the Pittsburgh Steelers for 2 years. Not enough time for him to screw up Big Ben.
Truthfully he was probably better suited to be an NFL QB coach than a collegiate OC.
My issues aren’t (completely) his knowledge base but rather his arrogance and refusal to adapt to the talent he had around him.
He truly sucked!! I would rank most the defensive assistants over the past 100yrs as being better OCS than whipless
