History is not on our side
This is not true of recent history. Consider the model Fred has gone with in the last 2 years, and I point out those because they are the ones that were based on the change in direction post Matt A. We had numerous players visit, but really focused on players with specific talents Fred felt we needed. He added some that one might say were players with potential, but not finished products. A few of our ‘potentials’ have chosen to give it a shot elsewhere, as have a couple we may have hoped would have continued to work at developing, but that’s the world we live in. Players who used to stick things out because transferring was limited and/or challenging, can now go closer to home or play with friends, and yes, in some cases, earn more NIL. None of the guys in the portal are local or have ties to Nebraska. There seems to be a focus on looking for players that mirror some of our prior starters, some even look to be upgrades physically.

We were in similar circumstances the last 2 years, and we filled the roster just fine. There are plenty of teams who face similar situations, so let’s not push the panic button, this isn’t 1985 with only a handful of transfers who have to sit a year.

We can both/all view ‘history’ differently. If you want to say/believe Fred Hoiberg is turning the program around in the new day and age of college athletics, I won’t take objection. Nebraska has everything needed for success on the court…fan base, donors, facilities, NIL (enough to be relevant) and it appears, the want to.

History didn’t mean much when bill Snyder was brought into Kansas state football, it didn’t mean much when Howard Schnellenberger went to Miami…Bobby Bowden/FSU, Bellotti/Oregon…

However, dont confuse history with momentum. Hoiberg will only begin to change the “history” of Nebraska basketball when the fan base experiences the feeling of March Madness rather than March Sadness. :Sign2cents:

I agree with your post, especially this last part. The reality is the need to pull in transfer classes like Gressel/Gary/Bandoumel and Mast/Williams/Allick is the new norm, and he's proved in these last 2 classes at least he can do it.

The reality is I think everyone turns over 50%+ of their rotation every year. I saw a stat that said only 7 of the 20 starters in the Final Four started their careers with the team they're on now. It got me curious so I did a little digging.

Nebraska: 0 starters who were at Nebraska as freshmen, 2 returning starters from 22-23 to 23-24
UConn: 2 starters who were there as freshmen, 2 returning starters
NCState: 0 and 2 according to the previous metrics
Purdue: 4 and 4
Bama: 1 and 1
Creighton (just threw them in for fun): 3 and 3, with having big time losses of Kaluma and Nembhard to the portal last year

A concerning stat I heard on yesterday's Pick Six podcast around roster makeup is that Fred has recruited 15 freshmen and not one has stayed on the roster longer than 2 years. So while the overall trend we're seeing in our roster is right in line with the average in CBB, we do need to get better at finding high schoolers who can play and will stay at least to a degree.

I think the only loss that stings is Lawrence. That was unexpected and I think most thought he'd be a big piece next year. As much as I like CJ at times this year he was very inconsistent, and I don't think anyone is surprised he chose to move on, including the coaches. The other transfers? Not even worried about those. Agree with El Rojo above that it would be nice to get some HS guys in that stick with the program. Really hate what has happened to CBB, having to relearn a roster every stinking year really isn't that fun.

It’s kind of sad that the North and South Dakota States of the world seem to do a better job of evaluating local HS talent.
On one hand, yes, they do get some. On the other hand, there have been several transfers from Nebraska to Dakota schools where the player never shows up on the court (Brady Heiman for one). I'd argue that Griesel never would have been a starter at Nebraska if he hadn't had time to grow at NDSU. Possibly the same with William Kyle III. Allick went to UMKC to develop.

I think Cale Jacobsen is the highest scoring individual (male) in the state final game in the past 10 years with 43 points. He averaged 17ppg as a senior at C1 Ashland. He got a walk-on offer, which I think is what Griesel, Saint Thomas and WKIII got. Should all of these guys have been scholarship offers? Probably not. Cale could be scoring 20ppg for a D2 school. Saint Thomas scored about 20ppg for Northern Colorado this last year. Is that Big Ten good? Maybe... but hindsight is 20/20.

I think it's more a representation of the developmental path in college basketball, and how everyone misses the late bloomers, not just a Nebraska thing. Mark Sears (Ohio to Bama) Scheirmann and Ashworth at Creighton (South Dakota and Utah St) Dalton Knecht (Northern Colorado to Tennesse) Max Abmas (Oral Roberts to Texas) to name a few. 12 out of the top 20 prospects on this list are transfering from mid-majors or lower https://www.cbssports.com/college-b...yers-as-bensley-joseph-commits-to-providence/

It sucks for the NDSU and SDSUs of the world that they'll probably never keep their talent anymore, but it's good for us.

If I was SDSUs coach I would chase borderline P5 talent. I would tell them about my ability to develop players, how we have successfully pushed guys to high P5 schools, how playing early has helped them and how coming to SDSU will guarantee them success.
