Omaha - Sam Haiby scored 15 of her team-high 17 points in the second half but it was not enough to prevent from home-standing Creighton from defeating the Nebraska women's basketball team 74-65 at D.J. Sokol Arena on Sunday afternoon.

Haiby, a 5-9 freshman guard from Moorhead, Minn., led the Huskers in scoring for the fourth time in seven games by going 4-for-11 from the field and 8-for-11 from the free throw line. She added five rebounds to keep Nebraska within striking distance in the final period after Creighton built a 13-point lead at 60-47 with 5:51 left in the contest.

The Huskers refused to surrender, cutting the CU margin to 62-57 with 3:20 left. Nebraska was still within striking distance at 69-64 with 25 seconds left before succumbing to the Jays. CU improved to 2-4 on the year.

Sophomore center Kate Cain added 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting as the only other Husker in double figures, while junior wing Nicea Eliely contributed nine points and a team-high eight rebounds for Nebraska, which slipped to 2-5 on the season.

Creighton senior Audrey Faber led the Bluejays with a double-double that included game highs of 18 points and 10 rebounds. Tatum Rembao added 18 points of her own and a team-high six assists.

The Jays received arguably their greatest contribution from guard Olivia Elger, who scored all 16 of her points in the second half. She knocked down 3-of-5 three-pointers, which was the different for CU, who managed to go 5-for-21 from long range thanks to Elger. The Huskers went just 2-for-22 in the worst shooting game of the season.

Creighton also hit 21-of-24 free throws to help seal the game down the stretch. Nebraska knocked down 19-of-27 free throws on the day.

For the game, Nebraska shot just 35.5 percent (22-64) from the floor, while Creighton hit 44.4 percent (24-54). The Huskers outworked the Jays on the glass 39-38, and also won the turnover battle, 16-13.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

• Nebraska is off to a 2-4 start, with three of the Husker losses to current top-25 teams, including Thursday’s 85-68 loss at No. 5 Louisville, current No. 21 Miami, and season opener narrow loss to current No. 24 Drake in two OTS. Drake defeated Creighton 85-69 in Omaha on Wednesday afternoon; the only common opponent between the Big Red and Bluejays this season.
• Nebraska was led by senior Maddie Simon at No. 5 Louisville on Thursday. The 6-2 forward from Lincoln scored a season-high 16 points while adding four rebounds, two assists and her first block of the season. Simon did not play in last season’s 64-49 loss to Creighton in Lincoln after suffering an ankle sprain late in pregame warm-ups against the Jays.
• Preseason All-Big Ten guard Hannah Whitish added a season-high 15 points for the Huskers at No. 5 Louisville. Whitish scored a team-high 14 points as the only Husker to manage double figures against the Jays last season.
• Husker freshman Sam Haiby produced her fourth game in double figures with 12 points off the bench at No. 5 Louisville. Haiby, who scored a career-high 20 points at Washington State, before getting 14 points at No. 24 Miami (Nov. 23) and 13 points against Drake (Nov. 7), leads Nebraska in scoring with 11.5 points per game.

Scouting the Creighton Bluejays
• Creighton comes into Sunday’s game with Nebraska at 1-4 after suffering an 85-69 loss to No. 24 Drake.
• The Bluejays advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season and finished fourth in the final BIG EAST standings in 2017-18.
• Senior Audrey Faber is a dominant player for Creighton. The 6-2 forward leads CU in scoring (17.6 ppg), rebounding (6.0 rpg), blocks (1.4 bpg) and is tied for the team lead in assists (2.2 apg). She is also tied for second on the team with five total steals. Faber managed 11 points and six rebounds in 39 minutes against Drake.
• As a team, Creighton is averaging just 64.6 points per game while shooting 40.4 percent from the field. The Bluejays have knocked down 50-of-140 (.357) threes, hitting 10 per game, compared to eight triples per game for the opposition. CU carries a minus-7.0 rebound margin (38-31) and a minus-0.4 turnover margin. The Jays also have been outscored 62-45 at the free throw line, despite shooting better than 80 percent at the stripe.

At the end of Q1, Creighton leads 10-8. Husker ladies in all black uniforms for the first time this year. Neither team playing very sharp; shooting is poor for both with long scoring droughts. Lets Go Husker Ladies! :Cheer2::Cheer2::Cheer2:

Jeff Greisch gets the BALL! (or was it Matt?)

Disappointing Loss in an ugly, poorly officiated game. :( (and what is with HSN, cutting off Matt & Jeff with 26 sec left in a close? game just to switch to Kent & Jeff's pre-game show )
