West Lafayette, Ind. - Hannah Whitish erupted for a season-high 28 points to go along with a career-high 12 assists for her first career double-double as Nebraska rolled to an 84-64 women's basketball win over Purdue at Mackey Arena on Thursday night.

Freshman Ashtyn Veerbeek just missed a double-double of her own by tying her career high with 14 points while adding nine rebounds, and fellow freshman Sam Haiby pitched in 13 points, including a career-high-tying three three-pointers. Nicea Eliely gave Nebraska four players in double figures with 12 points, including 10 in the first 22 minutes, as Nebraska erupted for a Big Ten season-best 84 points.

Nebraska improved to 5-5 in the Big Ten with its third conference road win, while the Huskers moved to 10-11 overall. The Boilermakers slipped to 15-8 overall and 6-4 in the league.

The Huskers were firing on all cylinders for most of the night, hitting a Big Ten season-best 49.3 percent from the field, including 40.7 percent (11-27) from three-point range. NU also knocked down 7-of-8 free throws (.875) and completely dominated the boards for 40 minutes, 41-25. The Huskers also won the turnover war, 11-10, despite full-court pressure for most of the night from the Boilermakers.

Nebraska used a 14-2 surge over the final 4:11 of the third quarter to turn the screws on the Boilermakers. Whitish, who scored 10 points in a huge third quarter for the Huskers, rested for the final 2:20 of the quarter, and Haiby took center stage. Haiby scored the final five points of the quarter for the Big Red including a half-court runner as time expired to send the Huskers to the final period with a 62-43 lead.

Purdue scored the first three points of the fourth quarter on a three from Karissa McLaughlin, but the Boilers were never able to get closer than 15 points the rest of the way. McLaughlin finished with 13 points and three three-pointers, while fellow guard Dominique Oden led Purdue with 18 points and a pair of threes. Ae'Rianna Harris managed 15 points and a team-high eight rebounds, but the rest of the Boilers combined for just 18 points.

Purdue hit 41.1 percent (23-56) of its shots, including 38.9 percent (7-18) of its threes, while going 11-for-14 (.786) at the line.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Close games have been the norm for Nebraska this season. Unfortunately, the Huskers are just 2-7 in games decided by six points or less (2 possessions), including 1-4 in Big Ten play. Purdue is 5-2 in two-possession games, including 4-1 in the league.

• The Nebraska-Purdue series has featured some of the most exciting and memorable games in school history since the Huskers joined the conference in 2011-12. The first-ever game between the two teams was a 93-89 triple-overtime win for the Huskers at Mackey Arena on Feb. 2, 2012. The second game in the series went double-overtime one month later in Indianapolis, as Purdue defeated the Huskers 74-70 in the 2012 Big Ten Championship Game.

• Freshman Leigha Brown (Auburn, Indiana) is Nebraska’s leading scorer at 10.1 points per game, including 11.8 points in Big Ten play.

• Brown and Sam Haiby (9.5 ppg) give Nebraska the only Big Ten roster with two freshmen leading their team in scoring. The Huskers are also the only Big Ten team with two non-starters as the team’s top two scorers.

Scouting The Purdue Boilermakers
• The Boilermakers own a 15-7 overall record including a 6-3 Big Ten mark.
• Purdue is a defense-first team that is allowing just 60.2 points in Big Ten play, while scoring just 62.2 points per conference contest. The Boilermakers are holding Big Ten foes to 41.2 percent shooting, including 35.2 percent from three-point range. Purdue is plus-2.7 on the boards, but minus-1.7 in turnovers through nine league games.
• Offensively, Purdue is shooting a solid 42 percent from the field, including 34.8 percent from three-point range. Purdue has outscored its opponents by 34 points (3.8 ppg) at the free throw line in conference play, while attempting 44 more free throws than the opposition. Purdue is shooting 72.2 percent at the free throw line in the league.

• Dominique Oden, a 5-8 junior guard, leads Purdue in scoring in Big Ten play (15.9 ppg) and shares the team’s scoring lead for the season (15.5 ppg). Oden, who leads Purdue with 37 steals, has hit 35.7 percent (35-98) of her threes and 78.4 percent (58-74) of her free throws.
• Sophomore guard Karissa McLaughlin has also averaged 15.5 ppg, while adding a team-best 4.0 assists. McLaughlin has hit 38.5 percent of her threes on the year and 92.8 percent (64-69) of her free throws.
• Ae’Rianna Harris, an athletic 6-1 forward, is averaging 13.1 points, 9.0 rebounds and 3.2 blocks per game on the season and ranks second among the Boilermakers with 25 steals.
• Tamara Farquhar, a 6-0 sophomore forward, is averaging 8.2 points and 8.7 rebounds per B 1G game.
• Kayana Traylor rounds out Purdue’s starters in Big Ten play by averaging 5.3 points, 2.7 rebounds and 3.0 assists.
