• Nebraska opened the 2017-18 season with a 62-53 win over SIU-Edwardsville on Saturday afternoon.

• Sophomore guard Bria Stallworth erupted for game highs of 21 points and six assists off the bench in her first game as a Husker. The UMass transfer who sat out the 2016-17 season hit 7-of-14 field goal attempts, including 3-of-6 threes, and 4-of-5 free throws.

• Freshman Kate Cain joined Stallworth with a tremendous opening performance off the bench in her own Husker debut. The 6-5 Cain scored 18 points, grabbed nine rebounds and added a game-high three blocked shots in 26 minutes. She hit 9-of-15 shots from the floor.

• Sophomore Nicea Eliely and senior guard Janay Morton enter the season with injuries and will likely be unavailable for Tuesday’s game with UMKC. Both are hopeful to return to full strength early in the non-conference season.

UMKC
• First-year head coach Jacie Hoyt leads UMKC to Pinnacle Bank Arena. Hoyt, a 2009 graduate of Wichita State, inherited a UMKC squad that returned four starters that went 10-19 overall and 4-10 in the Western Athletic Conference.

• UMKC opened the season with a 90-71 loss at Western Illinois on Friday night. Kristen Moore led four Roos in double figures with 22 points on 9-of-15 shooting. The 6-0 junior forward added six rebounds and four assists. She was a high school teammate of Nebraska’s Bria Stallworth.

• Samantha Waldron, a 5-11 senior guard out of Millard West High School had 11 points while playing the full 40 minutes in the opening-night loss at Western Illinois.

• Kiana Law contributed a double-double with 12 points, 11 rebounds and five assists. The 6-1 senior forward played 39 minutes in the opener. She averaged 7.7 points and 5.7 boards last season.

• Aries Washington, a 5-9 senior guard who averaged 6.9 points and 4.0 boards a year ago, contributed 16 points and five rebounds in 38 minutes against Western Illinois.

• India Johnson gave the Roos a boost off the bench with 10 points and four rebounds in the opener. A 5-6 fifth-year senior guard, Johnson hit 4-of-6 shots but committed four turnovers in just 18 minutes at Western Illinois.

• Daijane Dillard, Sierra Bone and Paige Husa were the only other players to see action in the season opener. Husa is a 6-1 senior center from Fairbury, Neb.
