Huskers to Honor Olympian Page

Former Husker Danielle Page will be honored by the Nebraska Athletic Department during Wednesday’s game. Page, who was a four-year letterwinner at Nebraska from 2005 to 2008, became the first Husker basketball player in history to win a medal at the Rio Olympics in 2016. The 6-2 forward from Monument, Colo., captured a bronze medal as a member of the Serbian Olympic Team, helping her adopted country to its first-ever Olympic medal in women’s basketball.

Page will be available for autographs in the main lobby at Pinnacle Bank Arena during pregame from 7 to 7:45 p.m. She will be honored on the court between the first and second quarters.
--------------------------------------

The Nebraska WBB team closes their non-conference schedule by taking on unbeaten and No. 1 UConn Wednesday at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

In 2014, UConn advanced to the NCAA Women’s Final Four by winning the NCAA Lincoln Regional with wins over BYU and Texas A&M.
UConn Coach Geno Auriemma was so impressed with Pinnacle Bank Arena, the city of Lincoln and the hospitality shown by Husker fans, that he arranged for a home-and-home series with the Big Red.

“The people are phenomenal. The building is spectacular,” Auriemma said. “This is really, really nice. There’s no doubt in my mind there will be another regional here, no question. Most places are fans of their team, not necessarily fans of the game. Here I think they take tremendous pride in their team, their school and the community, and they showed it.”

The Lady Huskers are coming off an 80-64 loss at Creighton on Sunday. Sophomore Jessica Shepard led the Huskers with her third consecutive double-double and sixth of the season with 22 points and 11 rebounds. She is averaging team bests of 19.4 points and 11.1 rebounds and has 16 career double-doubles for the Huskers. She also leads the Huskers with 13 three-pointers this season.

Freshman Nicea Eliely has added 8.6 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.6 assists and a team-leading 1.7 steals per game for the Huskers. She also leads the Huskers in field goal percentage (.500) while starting all 11 games.

The 11-time national champion UConn Huskies are riding one of the most amazing stretches of success in basketball history with four consecutive NCAA championships to their credit.

UConn has continued to fire on all cylinders early in 2016-17. Sophomores Katie Lou Sameulson (20.4 ppg, 4.3 rpg) and Napheesa Collier (20.2 ppg, 7.4 rpg) lead four Huskies averaging in double figures, including junior guard Kia Nurse (12.9 ppg, 2.2 rpg) and junior forward Gabby Williams (10.4 ppg, 8.1 rpg).

Freshman Crystal Dangerfield, a 5-5 point guard out of Murfreesboro, Tenn., has started UConn’s past two games with senior point guard Saniya Chong (4.6 ppg, 1.5 rpg) sitting out after suffering a concussion. Dangerfield is averaging 7.0 points and 3.0 rebounds so far this season.

Nebraska Coach Amy Williams was a senior on the 1997-98 Nebraska team that lost to UConn 71-61 in the Preseason WNIT Championship Game at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, Conn., on Nov. 21, 1997. Williams played seven minutes off the bench against UConn.

Another pitiful night. Shepard goes 1-13 with 5 turnovers. Geno politely states that it would be good if she worked on her conditioning and stamina so that she could use her talent and skills. I saw passes last night that wouldn't be acceptable on a middle school team. So far there hasn't been any improvement. Things are very, very dark with this formerly high level program. Will there ever be any accountability for an athletic department trashing a program?

I know everyone is bitterly disappointed with the 43 point loss to UConn last night, but before we get too down on ourselves, or the team, it may be worthwhile to remember that last year's team also lost; that time by 42 points, 88-46. That is the team that also included Rachel Theriot, Natalie Romeo, Anya Kalenta, Kyndall Clark and Rachel Blackburn, none of whom are on this year's team or, in the case of Rachel Blackburn, unable to play.

Here are links to last year's game discussions and game stats for anyone who would like to make their own comparison. I know playing UConn shows just how much more needs to be done (regarding both last year's team and this year's) by the coaches, And Players, to compete at this level, and we should be the better for it. What I'm trying to say is that all does not seem lost.

The Freshmen (3 of the 4 highest scorers and assists), And PBA, Shined last night. I thought it was sportsman-like for Geno to acknowledge that - but then again maybe he was just 'taking it easy' on us. ;) And, despite losing to the Undefeated, Number 1 team in the nation, the Huskers position in the Sagarin Ratings actually improved to #121, from #124 before the game.

Looking at last year's game discussion and game stats, All-in-all I think this year's team results compares quite favorably to last year's results. And this year's team shows a lot of promise, especially considering the up-and-coming talent And incoming talent available next year.

Red Don, you are a great fan, and I appreciate your efforts to shine up this pig. You are correct, Geno called off the dogs. Last year's game at UConn has little bearing on this year's game. It was on the road, UConn was considerably better last year. Geno could have beaten us by 60 this year if he had wanted. Finding hope in purported similarities of 40+ point defeats is a stretch even for the most ardent of optimists. Similar to being pleased that this formerly proud program is #121 in the Sagarin ratings.

What concerns me more than getting killed at home to UConn is how we play. I get that we have an extremely poor talent level throughout the squad; nothing the coaches can do about that at this point. But we make the most juvenile, lazy passes. Our decision making isn't any better than it was the first game. Our conditioning remains poor. We have shown no improvement on the court. Will we suddenly do that when conference play starts? Hopefully, but there is no reason to think so; the Drake and Creighton games were horrendous. Not sure where this "promise" stuff is, but it certainly hasn't been shown by the actions of the players on and off the court. This staff got here in April, and there has been zero progress with regard to player development since then (to name 3, Cincore, Simon and Washington are no better than they were a year ago).

The one positive is the greatest coach in women's college basketball history calling out our most heralded player after the game for her poor conditioning. Perhaps this is the low point and will be the impetus for Shepherd to mature and maximize her talent, and lead this team. Then again, the status quo over the last 15 months could remain. It will be interesting to watch if this finally makes a difference; no one has been able to reach her prior to this.

Finally, the exuberance over the freshmen is misplaced. The only difference maker in the bunch is Eliely, and she is frustrated by the laid back, gentle approach of the staff. She was recruited by a different staff, and time will tell if she will stick around for a massive rebuilding project with a staff that didn't recruit her.

Perhaps this staff will recruit well enough to win here, and with players, all will be well. But there are some warning signs out there with regard to player development and improvement, leadership (getting a couple of players to get in shape), and in-game coaching. This is a different level than any of them have been at (which by itself is troubling; we should have been able to get a proven upper D1 commodity with the history of our program).

I'm all off the Jessica Shepherd train. Maybe she's used to being coddled and praised and never held accountable, but she has zero discipline out there. Soooooo much talent wasted.
