Cal women’s basketball ready to overwhelm Nebraska
whoops_danielho_file-900x580.jpg

"Center Kristine Anigwe is averaging 18.5 points and 9.7 rebounds per game — and she’s only six games into a season..........

To combat Anigwe, the Huskers have another one of the top players in the country in sophomore Jessica Shepard, who was recently named to the Naismith Trophy Women’s College Player of the Year Preseason Watch List. This was in part because of the fact that she is averaging 17.8 points and 9.8 assists in the season so far, along with two double-doubles.

But if Shepard is Nebraska’s Anigwe, the rest of the team lacks any players who can even compare to the remainder of the Bears’ squad. With contributing players like Asha Thomas, Courtney Range and Mikayla Cowling, Cal far outnumbers the Huskers when it comes to offensive weapons. With Anigwe, Range, Cowling and Thomas all averaging over 10 points per game and contributing a huge percentage of the Bears’ average 77.5 points per game, they are poised to obliterate Nebraska’s 58.3 points per game...........

What it comes down to is that the Bears regularly use a seven- or eight-man rotation filled with players who can all contribute on both ends of the court — and Nebraska, conversely, relies almost exclusively on Shepard to produce their results. So even if Anigwe gets taken to the cleaners, Cal has a buffer that will more than handle what Nebraska has to offer."

Coach Lindsay Gottlieb brings her Cal Golden Bears to Lincoln for the first time with a 6-0 record to open the season. The Bears are receiving top-25 consideration thanks to four talented returning starters and more depth than they had a year ago.

Last season, Cal struggled to a 15-17 overall record and a 4-14 Pac-12 mark to finish 10th in the conference. Along the way, the young Bears defeated Nebraska, 87-80 in overtime at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley on Dec. 15.

The Huskers, who are 3-1 at home, will shoot for their fourth win against an unbeaten Bears bunch. The Big Red also will try to avenge an 87-80 overtime loss to the Bears in Berkeley last season. If the Huskers are going to be successful, they will have to control the tempo against an explosive and experienced team from Cal.

Hanging with Cal, 25-19 at the end of Q1. Against Cal we gotta make those shots or finish better in the paint.

Cal pulling ahead, lead by 19; 47-28 at the half as Whitish hits a buzzer-beating trey!

Hopefully someday there will be some accountability for Eichorst ruining a successful basketball program. We may never recover.

Cal smothers Huskers, but Williams sees rays of hope

“Our whole game plan was to be disruptive,” said Bears coach Lindsay Gottlieb. “We disrupted with our traps, with our guards, our full-court press.

Rays of optimism shined in the form of a career-high 19 points from freshman guard Nicea Eliely and a season-high 11 from sophomore Maddie Simon.

There was also a vastly improved defensive effort in the second half. Nebraska suffered its fourth consecutive loss, and the Huskers were fighting for air in the first half. But they played the Bears to two points (39-37) after halftime.

“They scored on some back screens, but we showed we can mix things up and that’s a good sign,” Williams said. She added that her team’s offense was gradually improving in shot choices and in running the attack.

“We had 18 assists and that shows we’re starting to figure things out. Pretty soon, you’ll see the light switch turn on.”
