Let's hope the time off helped hit a reset and renewed energy back to the start of the year. Go get em Ladies! GBR
IMO the L’s during the Big Ten part of the schedule I don’t think were about lack of energy. I don’t question the players effort in most, if not all, of the games this year. Unfortunately the performance/talent just wasn’t there this season. IMO this season was one of the few years under Amy that Minnesota and a bunch of B1G schools other than just Iowa simply had more physical talent on the roster. (Lord help us if Minnesota stays good. Nebraska’s done really well getting players from that state to leave home and come to Lincoln.)
That was in part because of recruiting, Amy got almost nothing from her portal recruits, and in part because of injuries and graduation. Nebraska’s best frontcourt players either graduated (Markowski) or have been injured (Potts), plus Allison was out all year too.
The Extra Points Substack/newsletter by Matt Brown FOIA’d the WBB budget documents for every program in the NCAA tournament this year. If I recall correctly, Nebraska spent about $6.2 million on WBB this season. Other B1G programs spent more. Not to mention the fact that many other P4, plus UConn, programs spent more on WBB, which may indicate their coaches had/have more NIL money to spend in the portal. That might explain why this year’s portal recruits were players who left P4 schools looking for more playing time (Fisher/Weaver) or mid-major players looking for a P4 opportunity (Johnson.)
Amy’s incoming recruiting class is outstanding. Perhaps her best one yet, and the player development’s pretty good (Hargrove is example No. 1, and even though she was already a very good, highly recruited player, Britt Prince has gotten better too), but if Nebraska wants to stay competitive in B1G WBB, Amy’s probably going to need more $. Not only to get portal recruits who can really contribute, but also to keep her highly regarded players
out of the portal. Now, I’m not saying players like Prince are “looking around” at all, but this is a business for the players just as much as it is for the schools/coaches. I can’t blame any player who considers their and their family’s future. IMO, Amy’s proven she can get great recruits to come to Nebraska. The AD may just need to help her with more $ to make sure most of those recruits stay at Nebraska four years.
