WBB 2025-2026 Season Thread

Natalie Potts is officially out for the season. They really need to take a look at their medical/training staff. This is now the second player in recent years to miss more than a calender year with a knee injury. That's not normal.

Also, according to the article, Allison Weidner wiill not be back next year, unlike what Amy Williams said when she announced Weidner would miss this season. If Allison's done, that makes me very, very sad. The only "positive" thing I can say about that is I remember the last game she played, and she went off that night. It was a home game and the crowd at PBA went nuts for her. As a in-state kid, it's nice that her last game action for her team might be that night.

Lastly, something is going on with Emily Fisher, so the Huskers have essentially been playing three players down. Including two front court players. She's been wearing a sleeve on one leg when she has played and I don't think that's just a style thing because we know she's been out for some games with an unknown injury. Against NW she played 11 minutes, and that's significantly more minutes than previous games. She'd only played 2-3 minutes per game the last handful of games before NW, and there were some games she didn't play at all even though she was in uniform. Either she's playing through an injury or *really* fallen out of the rotation, maybe both. If she's fallen out of the rotation I wouldn't be surprised if she's back in the portal after the season.

Given the number of ranked teams and road games left in the regular season, the post season may be the NIT rather than the Big Dance. Right now, IMO the tOSU, Maryland and Iowa games are likely L's. The Huskers are going to have to win road games at Michigan, Minnesota, Oregon and Washington, beat Rutgers at home and win at least one game in the Big Ten tournament to make the NCAA tournament I think because the UVA and Creighton non-conference wins don't look as good as they used to. UVA's got a problem with that "bubble team" metric the committee's using now. Other than playing the Huskers, their non-conference schedule is particularly pathetic. Unfortunately, Creighton's having a rough year and is three games under .500 right now. An upset of one of the three ranked teams would really help obviously.

Lots of women blow knees out. And it takes a minute to heal. I think that Weidner rushed her come back. Maybe Potts's knee isn't responding like it should. I think she metioned that it was slow going ffor her.

I'm still liking your optimism; but, feeling like maybe you're not watching many of the other teams in the Big Ten?

All of the points you've mentioned are definitely accurate compared to last year's team/player performance. But, switch over from NFL to the U Conn/Ohio State game today and see what you think of Ohio State's Kennedy Cambridge for defensive guard play. I'm also interested to see more of Maryland's Oluchi Okananwa (transfer from Duke) as well.

I'm still skeptical that the inside play will match up well against many of the Big Ten teams, even with Potts back. I'll be happy to eat crow if your assessment is better than mine.

Revisiting...the above was my response to SWVA (below) back in November...I didn't get a chance to watch the Ohio State game; but, I see in the box score that Kennedy Cambridge had 8 rebounds, 7 steals. Did she guard Prince (who only shot 4 of 13)? Sadly, I'm feeling that my early season assessment is more accurate than SWVA... no offense and not meant personally. Not many are here on the WBB Board and I appreciate the insights.

SWVAHusker said:
Britt will take the ball to the hole, she's got no fear. Against Creighton, she had one drive where she went up with two hands still on the ball like she wanted to dunk it like MJ. I also think Kennadi can be a threat to take the ball to the hole like Sam Haiby would do before her knee injury. Kennadi is fast.

The BTN broadcasters also pointed out Kennadi's got more assists so far this year than Amy had in her first two years as a Husker. They mentioned that they hoped Kennadi "reminded" her Mom about that.

As for an inside presence, Petra's improved, and hopefully Emily Fisher won't be out injured too long. Once Potts is back, I think they'll be more than okay inside.

Forgot to mention that the "defensive stopper" on the outside is Callin Hake. She's the best defensive guard in the conference, and IMO one of the best in the country. Before last season, she apparently went to "point guard school" taught by Jaz. Whatever Jaz helped her on worked, because I don't think any guard in the conference took more charges than Callin. Toward the end of the season, her outside shot seemed to "come back" too, and that's continued into this year.

Solid showing against a top ten Michigan team. Led by 2 at the half, faded down the stretch.

You were right, especially about the rebounding problems without Markowski and Potts. I really thought Bozan would take a bigger step forward than she has. Although, hopefully basicalky getting benched against tOSU sent a message. IMO, the only Huskers who have gotten better this season are Hargrove, Kennadi Williams and Prince. Of course Prince was already very good. This season I think she's done a better job of being more assertive on offense, because she is the Huskers best player. UMD played her really tough, and hopefully she and the other guards will learn from that. Lazy passes turned into turnovers (again.)

If Allison really has decided to not try and come back next season it may be at least partially be because Amy Williams needs the roster spot to get a C or F from the portal before next season. Given the issues with Natalie's rehab, I don't think the Huskers can afford to not get a frontcourt player from the portal. Although, who knows how much $ Amy's been allocated. The Huskers probably can't afford to outbid a traditional WBB B1G power like UMD, U$C and UCLA. The Huskers have unfortunately gotten very little out of this season's portal additions (Fisher, Johnson & Weaver.)

I didn't realize this until now, but we haven't seen 24/7 composite 4-star freshman G Alanna Neale at all since December 21st, and she only played more than 1 minute in the games against Omaha, Bradley and Oral Roberts. So essentially the Huskers have been playing 3-4 players (Potts, Weidner, Fisher and Neale) "down" in a lot of games. Not sure if she's injured or the coaches decided she needs a year to adjust and learn the college game. I was pleased to see that in the UMD game Fisher looked like she's healthier than she has been lately though.

Unless the "bottom really falls out" it looks like Charlie Creame's WBB Bracketology is going to keep putting Nebraska in the NCAA Tournament bracket, IMO basically because the Huskers are a Big 10 school, and there's a bias against mid major teams getting at large bids unless they really have standout overall records and beat at least 1-2 Quad 1/Top 25 team they're not supposed to beat. Right now, I don't think Nebraska deserves it though.

I asked Jazz on one of her IG posts if she, Alexis and Issie would like to enroll in grad school before March. NBA players are returning to college basketball, why not them too?

Their non-conference record was impressive (although not against any real heavy-weight), so I expect that they'll make it in and keep sliding down the seed lines unless they can right the ship quickly. Interesting that Nebraska is still #25 in the NET, so they are solidly in the field at the moment on that metric.

Massey computer rankings (formerly part of the college football BCS calculation) has been tracking the small number of computer-based rating systems: https://masseyratings.com/ranks?s=cbw.

The Huskers have fallen from hosting as a top-16 seed at the end of the non-conference schedule to now being #29 and an 8-seed. The 8/9 seed line is a horrible place to be...likely to face U Conn, Texas, or South Carolina in the second round if you can get past what is likely a competitive first round game.

The Huskers will get lumped in with Oregon, Washington, and Illinois right now. They play at Oregon and Washington in a couple of weeks. They'll need some big wins down the stretch to ensure they are ahead of those teams and secure a tourney spot.

We are also at the point of the season where this site (https://bball.notnothing.net/big10.php?sport=wbb) is interesting. You can play with results for all of the remaining games to see where your team may end up in the conference seedings.

I went through the Husker remaining games and came up with a final 6-12 conference record (losing four of their last five, including at Minnesota, both west coast games, and the home game with Iowa).

They should at least be in the conference tournament (bottom three still don't get in on the women's side) and would be a 12-seed based on my picks. Face #13 Indiana, who I think is better then their record indicates, and then a #5 Minnesota team that has been getting better all season.

My picks have them three games out of the 11-seed, meaning they'd likely need to go 4-1 instead of 1-4 the rest of the way to climb out of that 12-seed spot.

Well, this Minnesota loss wasn't good. Only slightly got outrebounded this time, and the turnovers were equal, but the defense "forgot" to show up. Allowed Minnesota to shoot 52%, and even more disturbing the Huskers allowed a whopping 52 points in the paint!

That just can't happen again if Nebraska wants to make the Big Dance.

Nebraska's down to a No. 10 seed and the #3 of 4 teams in Creme's Last Four Byes. If they lose to Iowa, as expected, IMO they might end up as a #11 seed and playing in the First Four by the game at Oregon. I really do think they're going to have to win out after the Iowa game and win at least one Big Ten Tournament game to avoid ending up as a 10-11 seed, or worse.

I agree. I will be in Lincoln for tomorrow's game and hope to see an upset.

this team isnt making the tournament this year i'm afraid. Prince likely to transfer . Too bad a better coaching situation might have gotten the ladies into another tourney, i only see one possible win going forward and one and done in the B1G tourn. Prince can play in the WNBA but she needs to be coached up to get there and that wont happen here i'm sad to say....

Prince has been coached up just fine. The losses have obscured the fact she's having a great season, and gotten better at "hunting" for her own shot and taking it instead of trying to get her teammates involved when she's got the better shot. Prince is averaging 17.3 ppg, 4.2 APG, 3.9 RPG, 55% FG, 48% from Three and 93% from the FT line. Until her 3PT% dipped under 50%, she was on a very short list of 50-50-90% players.

IMO the biggest reason Amy Williams might survive this season is because Prince transfers if Amy's gone. I also think Amy and the staff have done a really good job developing Hargrove and Kennadi Williams. Kennadi's already a better player than her Mom was, and Hargrove's become a very good, reliable starter in just her second season. It's taken longer, but Maupin has gotten better lately too, I think. The only player who's had a really rough year is Bozan, and she's one of the two frontcourt players the Huskers couldn't afford to not get better this season. The other's Peatrie, and she's had some rough streches this year too.

The reason I'm so frustrated is because the problem this year is the same thing we've seen in past years, injuries and getting very little from the portal. I absolutely love Allison Weidner. She's the toughest athlete Nebraska's got regardless of sport. But Amy can't afford to go another season knowing her roster is depleted from the start. Unless Allison's 100% medically cleared this spring, Amy just can't afford to keep her for next season. Natalie Potts has got to get medically cleared this spring too. I've never seen a program have so many players with knee problems. I still have questions about why Potts ACL rehab is taking longer than the "usual" 12 months. Even Allison's first rehab didn't take longer than normal. She sustained her second ACL injury in preseson practice a couple years ago. I think Nebraska needs to look at the training/medical staff this offseason.

The portal additions have gotten Amy almost nothing. I understand culture's important, but at some point you gotta get the best talent you can get and let the culture stuff work itself out. IMO she may be leery of getting "another Scoggins," who I didn't get the sense was very popular even before the "incident." Having said that, I doubt Amy's working with the same NIL budget as Iowa, UCLA, USC and Ohio State's women's bball teams have and that's not her fault. Maybe getting mid-major players like Johnson looking to transfer to a high major school is the best Amy can do given the resources she has.

I really would love to know what's up with 3/4-star freshman G Alanna Neale. We haven't seen her since the non-conference season, and she only played more than one minute in the blowouts. Given Allison's out, Natalie's out, Neale's out and Fisher's been in and out, the Huskers have had a *really* short bench some games.

Lastly, what does next year's incoming HS recruiting class look like? I don't even know. Amy's got at least two, and depending on Weidner, maybe three, open roster spots for next season. If Amy's gone, you probably lose the HS recruiting class too.
