Using third party recruiting services...

we're back

Is this ever done? Is a school allowed to contract with an outside service for the purpose of identifying potential recruits? Following criteria provided by the school, the service identifies the potential recruit, then turns the actual recruiting back over to the school? The service could also perform any called for background checks.

Oregon got in a little trouble a few years ago for an arrangement similar to what you are describing. They also got some very good players through the third party they were using.

In fairness, I think that third party might have done more than identify potential target$.

Happens all the time. Wandales trainer can be contacted by anyone and it's not a violation. You can contact their high school coach to see if they are happy or not and get a message to them.

With the $$ we have, we should expand the recruiting organization to start working the TP.

I forget which head coach talked about this last season, but one of them said that he believed major college programs would start building entire "front office" type recruiting operations. Half the people would focus on the transfer portal and the other half would focus on HS/JUCO scouting. IMO the next friction we're going to see between the G5 and P5 schools (beyond the obvious issues with the playoff) will be over "analysts" and other support staff for football and men's basketball. IMO the G5 schools are eventually going to try to limit this arms race because it's one more area in which they don't have the $ to compete.

This article from 2012 talks about it.
